🏳️‍🌈 Marking Pride Month 🏳️‍🌈

Last year research showed less than half of LGBTQ+ people felt safe holding their partner’s hand in public.

With statistics like this still demonstrating that far too many LGBTQ+ people in the UK are worried about their rights, safety and acceptance, Pride Month is as necessary as ever.

So whilst Pride is a joyful time to celebrate our local community’s brilliant diversity, it’s also an important opportunity to speak out, stand together, and demand better for our LGBTQ+ friends, family and neighbours. Everyone deserves to feel safe to be who they are.

Pride is a celebration, but fundamentally it is a protest - and this sort of thing is exactly why. Chelmsford Lib Dems and everyone living where Reform is trying this on has our full support. We're working on more, but in the meantime, make your voices heard - and join us in Chelmsford on the 20th of June to help make Essex Pride as loud and fierce as possible. 👇

One of Reform's first acts on taking control of Essex County Council was to ban libraries from promoting Pride and similar events. We think this is wrong. Liberal Democrat councillors will present this petition at the next council meeting on 14th July.

The EHRC code of practice is not fit for purpose. It must be withdrawn, and updated legislation urgently worked on.

Today Cllr Victor Chamberlain wrote to Bridget Phillipson to urge her to withdraw the guidance. We must stand in solidarity with the trans community.

Chelmsford City Council and Chelmsford Theatre are working with Essex Pride to deliver an enhanced programme of Pride celebrations on Saturday 20 June.

Chelmsford Lib Dems believe that Essex libraries should be places where all can come together for learning and sharing knowledge. We therefore oppose the Reform leadership at Essex County Council banning advertising of Pride events on their social media and community event boards in Essex CC libraries.

All councils (including Essex) have a legal duty under the Equality Act 2010 to advance equality of opportunity between people who share a protected characteristic and those who do not. This includes "having regard to the need to...encourage persons who share a relevant protected characteristic to participate in public life".

Chelmsford Lib Dems are looking forward to celebrating Pride again on 20 June. We will always stand up for the rights of the LGBT+ community.

The support from our Parliamentary Party has been great over the last few days. Thank you to everyone who has added their voice to ours. 🧡

I write this as a serial and vocal complainer about much of what the Parliamentary Party does. I have been such for many years. Way back in the neolithic era I won awards for blogging my complaints. So it’s only fair that when the Parliamentary Party knocks something out of the park I be equally.....
