There's still time for people in East Middlesbrough to apply to help influence how £40m of funding is spent in their area.

The government has chosen Park End and Thorntree to each receive £20m of investment over the next decade as part of the Pride in Place agenda.

MFC Foundation Chief Executive Charlotte Dinsdale and community leader Gary Hamilton have been appointed to oversee the regeneration project.

The funding can be spent on issues including housing, education, employment, health and wellbeing, transport and safety.

To help to develop plans, 12 local board members will now be recruited - six for each area - to help lead the plans.

Residents are being invited to help shape plans for the first phase of an exciting proposal to bring houses to Middlehaven.

A partnership between Middlesbrough Council and regeneration experts Capital&Centric will see 462 houses and apartments around the Old Town Hall.

This is the first phase of a development which could eventually see thousands of new homes built.

Built alongside new leisure and retail attractions, it will deliver high-quality homes including houses and low-rise build-to-rent apartments, alongside shared gardens, play streets, green pedestrian routes and new spaces for the community.

Capital&Centric - renowned for developing a number of brownfield regeneration sites across the UK - has been working with international architects MVRDV and shedkm to explore how the new neighbourhood could look and feel.

Its ambition is for a new community where residents live, learn, work and play, all in one place.

A public drop-in consultation will take place on Thursday, September 10 from 4pm to 7pm at TigerIvy on Albert Road, Middlesbrough.

There’s no need to book, with feedback helping to shape a planning application which would potentially be submitted later this year.

Residents across Middlesbrough can now access free period products in toilets located within all Community Hubs and Libraries, helping to tackle period poverty and ensure everyone can manage their periods with dignity.

Products will be available free of charge in toilet facilities across all our manned venues, ensuring that anyone caught unprepared or facing financial difficulties can access the items they need without stigma.

Community Hubs and Libraries are trusted spaces at the heart of local communities and are often the first point of contact for residents seeking information, advice and support.

Making period products available in these locations strengthens their role as welcoming and inclusive environments for everyone.

A major overhaul of a key Middlesbrough road junction is set for completion later this week.

The large-scale programme of repairs and improvements to the A172/A174 Marton Interchange began in March with motorists warned of significant disruption.

The scheme - led by Middlesbrough Council and main contractor Esh Construction - required the use of contraflow system on the A172 and occasional overnight closures.

Now the 54-year-old structure is set to re-open at the weekend having been given a new lease of life.

Upgrade works include:

• Concrete repairs beneath the bridge
• Replacement of waterproofing and expansion joints
• Carriageway resurfacing
• New kerbs and footways
• Installation of a new pedestrian parapet and guardrails

The road – including the A174 slip roads - is due to be fully reopened in the early hours of Saturday (September 5).

Motorists are warned of some final disruption on Thursday and Friday nights while road markings are updated and traffic management is removed.

A Middlesbrough Council spokesman said: “These essential repairs and improvements are a key part of our ongoing bridges and structures maintenance programme.

“Working closely with Esh Construction, we’ve worked hard to avoid lengthy disruptions and keep traffic flowing across the bridge throughout.

“We’re grateful the to the public for their patience and understanding throughout this important project.”

Steven Garrigan, Divisional Director at Esh Construction, said: “This scheme has involved a significant programme of repairs and upgrades to extend the lifespan of an important piece of Middlesbrough’s infrastructure.

“Working in close partnership with Middlesbrough Council, we’ve successfully delivered a range of structural repairs and improvements that will enhance the resilience of the structure and ensure it continues to serve the community for decades to come.”

A Family Hubs service which helps children’s language and communication skills has been praised for providing flexible support for busy working parents.

The Let’s Talk parent sessions give families practical ideas and tips to help their children’s language skills.

Local parents, Laura and Brett recently took part in the sessions as they were concerned about their young son, Carter’s (pictured below) speech.

These free sessions take place via video calls, on a day and time that works for parents, making it easier to fit support around family life.

During the Let’s Talk sessions, Laura and Brett were shown activities they could do with Carter to help build his vocabulary.

Carter is now less frustrated as he is finding it easier to tell others what he needs and how he feels.

When asked if they would recommend Let’s Talk to other parents, mum Laura said: “Do it 100% – it has been helpful, and I would strongly recommend the sessions.

“The workshops are not only about speech, but give you tips about how to interact with your little one. It has really opened our eyes about how we speak and play with Carter.”

"At the moment they're doing this while also dealing with the devastating loss of two of their own. They deserve respect and support from us all.

Children have been encouraged to discover the joy of reading throughout the school holidays as part of the Read to the Beat summer challenge at Middlesbrough's libraries.

Those who signed up received a special collector's folder and can earn stickers and prizes each time they finish a book, helping to make reading even more rewarding and fun.

Alongside the challenge, libraries across Middlesbrough have been hosting a variety of interactive sessions to inspire more young people to get involved.

Activities have included Crafting to the Beat, Building to the Beat, and exciting musical workshops led by Martyn the Music Man and The Welcome Foundation.

At Hemlington Library, children enjoyed a fantastic Grimm's Beastly Tales storytelling session with Susanna from Telling Tales, while Marton Library welcomed local author James Harris for a monstrously fun event all about creating and exploring monsters.

It's been wonderful to see so many children getting involved, discovering new books, and enjoying the wide range of activities on offer this summer.

The anniversary of the Battle of Britain will be commemorated in Middlesbrough next month with the annual Parade and Service.

This year’s event takes place at the Cenotaph on Linthorpe Road on Sunday, September 13 and has been organised by 1869 (Middlesbrough) Sqn Air Cadets.

In commemoration of the 86th anniversary of the Battle of Britain, Air Cadet squadrons from around the area will be on parade at the Cenotaph at 11.30am where a short service and wreath-laying ceremony will be held.

The Battle of Britain saw the German air force attempt to gain air superiority over the RAF from July to September 1940.

Their defeat prevented Germany from invading Britain and was one of the turning points of World War Two.

Councillor Linda Lewis, Middlesbrough Council’s Armed Forces Champion, said: “The Battle of Britain was a pivotal moment in our nation’s history, and our annual Parade and Service is fitting recognition of all those who played their part.

“The people of Middlesbrough will never forget the sacrifice made by the many brave men and women who laid down their lives for the freedoms we enjoy to this day.”
