This week is Dementia Action Week, an awareness campaign created by the Alzheimer's Society. You can view our dementia-friendly reads on our website at https://libraries.essex.gov.uk/digital-content/our-reading-suggestions/dementia-friendly-reads

We are still looking for a volunteer to help us set up a Memory Cafe at Witham Library. If you are interested, please speak to a member of staff or email [email protected] .

If you or a loved one is struggling with dementia or other memory issues, please speak to a member of staff about a Memory Card. This card has no overdue fees, so if you return a book late you will not be charged. Also, if you know someone who can't leave the house, you can speak to us about a Friends and Carers card or our Home Library Service.

You might know Witham Library provides hearing aid batteries, but did you know we also have signing books for children and adults?

Deaf Awareness Week runs from the 4 to 10 of May. This year's theme is 'Right to understand- Together, we break barriers.’ The deaf community often faces barriers to communication, from a lack of sign language interpreters to poor or no subtitling in videos and online content. Deaf Awareness Week aims to raise awareness of these communication issues and advocate for better access to communication tools.

Why not learn the BSL fingerspelling alphabet to help create a world where communication is available for everyone? You can find more resources online at https://www.signature.org.uk/deaf-awareness-week/ or come in and borrow our BSL and Makaton books!
