The Ambassador of Cuba to Grenada, Yadirys Echenique Paz, held a meeting with former Grenadian Prime Minister Hon. Keith Mitchell, during which she expressed gratitude for the Caribbean leader’s contributions to strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries.

In this regard, the diplomat highlighted that during Mitchell’s years of leadership, relations between Cuba and Grenada found a space for recovery and consolidation, marked by gestures of trust and cooperation in strategic sectors such as health and education.
She underscored that his support was decisive in relaunching ties after the period of estrangement that followed the U.S. invasion of 1983.

For his part, Mitchell voiced his support for Cuba in the face of the difficulties caused by the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States. He reiterated that Caribbean solidarity is a non-negotiable principle, affirming that Cuba can always count on Grenada’s voice in defense of its sovereignty.

During the meeting, Mitchell recalled his visits to Havana and his encounters with Cuban leaders. He especially remembered Fidel Castro’s visit to Grenada in 1998, which he described as a historic moment for the region that consolidated the friendship between the two peoples.

The Cuban diplomat noted that the memory of those encounters serves as a reminder that cooperation and solidarity are pillars of the Cuba–Grenada relationship.

Keith Mitchell, a member of the House of Representatives, is recognized for his historic leadership at the helm of the New National Party (NNP). He is also the longest-serving head of government in Grenada’s history.

Un homenaje por el centenario de Fidel Castro Ruz fue realizado en Saint George's, capital de Granada. El evento estuvo encabezado por la embajadora de Cuba en ese país, Yadirys Echenique Paz, la gobernadora general de Granada, Su Excelencia Dame Cécile La Gr***de, el primer ministro en funciones, Honorable Lennox Andrews, y la presidenta del Senado, Honorable Dessima Williams.

En su intervención, la embajadora Echenique Paz destacó la trascendencia de Fidel más allá de las fronteras de Cuba, al subrayar su impacto en América Latina y el Caribe, y de manera especial en Granada. La diplomática antillana recordó la cooperación bilateral en salud e ingeniería, así como la formación de profesionales granadinos en universidades cubanas, ejemplos concretos de la solidaridad que Fidel promovió en la región.

Por su parte, la presidenta del Senado evocó la dimensión política del legado de Fidel. La dirigente granadina compartió con los invitados algunos recuerdos personales con Fidel, y reflexionó sobre episodios trascendentales que entrelazaron al líder cubano con la Revolución Granadina.

En las palabras finales, el primer ministro en funciones, Honorable Lennox Andrews, agradeció “la buena suerte de haber sido educado de forma gratuita en las universidades en Cuba”. En nombre del gobierno y del pueblo de Granada, afirmó al referirse a Fidel, que su “obra e ideas nunca morirán, sino que vivirán para siempre y permanecerán en los corazones y las mentes de los pueblos del Caribe, de Latinoamérica y del mundo”.

En el homenaje también participaron representantes del cuerpo diplomático acreditado, miembros del Comité de Graduados de Granada en Cuba, de la Asociación de Amistad Granada–Cuba, de la misión estatal cubana y una representación de cubanos residentes en el país, así como parlamentarios, dirigentes políticos y gubernamentales del pequeño Estado Insular. Entre los invitados se encontraban granadinos que coincidieron con el Comandante en Jefe durante su visita a esa nación en 1998.

Para los participantes la figura de Fidel Castro es clave en la historia de las relaciones entre Cuba y Granada. Su cercanía al líder granadino Maurice Bishop propició la colaboración entre ambos países y dejó una huella en los vínculos bilaterales que aún permanece fresca.
