Today, acting High Commissioner Simon Fellows hosted students from Tosajuku High School and together with Japanese Ambassador Noriyuki Shikata spoke about what life and study in 🇲🇾 could look like.

A visiting delegation from 🇦🇺’s eSafety Office and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts, recently met officials from Kementerian Komunikasi and Kementerian Pembangunan Wanita, Keluarga dan Masyarakat KPWKM to discuss online safety.

Both sides shared experiences about enforcement, regulatory reform and private sector accountability for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of users.

🇦🇺 Australia is working closely with 🇲🇾 Malaysia to help shape a safer online environment for all 🌐

Last week, experts from 🇦🇺’s eSafety Office and the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications, Sport and the Arts, delivered Online Safety Regulation Workshops to Malaysian policymakers and civil society partners, supported by the Southeast Asia and Australia Government Partnerships Program (SEAG2G).

We also hosted a panel discussion on online harms and technology-enabled gender-based violence, joined by UNICEF Malaysia, Universiti Putra Malaysia and the Institute of Strategic and International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia.

This World Day Against Trafficking in Persons, we confront a stark reality: people are .

Across ASEAN and beyond 🌏, hundreds of thousands of workers are being deceived into online scam operations and held in coercive, exploitative conditions.

This is not just cybercrime. It is human trafficking.

Across East and Southeast Asia, organised crime groups are generating billions through scam operations that rely on trafficking and exploitation.

Behind these criminal enterprises is another, often invisible, group of victims: people trafficked into scam compounds and forced to carry out fraud under threats of violence and intimidation.

⚠️ This is a crime with two victims - those who are defrauded and those who are exploited. As traffickers and criminal networks adapt their methods, our response must evolve too.

🤝 Australia is working with ASEAN and regional partners to strengthen justice responses, protect victims and disrupt organised crime through the ASEAN-Australia Counter Trafficking program.
