A little while ago, we hosted whakairo (carving) and raranga (weaving) demonstrations and workshops at the homestead, giving participants the opportunity to engage with toi Māori kaupapa through hands on experiences.

Led by artists featured in our current Matariki: Whiria te Tāngata exhibition, the sessions offered a chance to learn traditional techniques, connect with mātauranga Māori, and experience the stories and practices behind the works on display in our Upstairs Gallery.

Congratulations to Papakura/South Auckland local, Greatsouth on the release of their new album! 🎶

We’re especially excited to see a track titled ‘Pukepuke’ featured on the album.

When we celebrated the reopening of Nathan Homestead in November last year, we programmed our Music Room to showcase the space and its potential for aspiring artists and musicians.

Payton (Greatsouth) and a few friends took over the room for the morning, instinctively capturing sounds from the celebrations, including recordings of taonga pūoro, alongside the natural conversations and atmosphere of the people visiting the space. Those recordings have now become part of the album amongst the other beautiful waiata.

Congratulations again to Greatsouth. We’re proud to be a small part of your project 🎧✨ Stream ‘Hellhole of the Pacific’ and support our local artists 🎉
