🏗️ High above the bustling New Dunedin Hospital | Project Whakatuputupu construction site, Michael Schimanski has one of the best office views in town.

It’s also one of the tougher commutes. Before each shift, the tower crane operator climbs 184 steps up a 68-metre ladder to reach his cab high above New Zealand’s largest health infrastructure project.

From there, he helps keep construction moving on a hospital that will support healthcare for generations to come. 🏥🚧

“You can see the building changing every day and you know it’s going to make a real difference for people who use it in the future.”

🎉 We’re pleased to share that Dunedin Hospital has a new interim Sterile Services Unit.

The new interim unit brings two existing sterile services areas together in one modern space, replacing facilities that no longer had the layout, space or infrastructure needed to meet current standards and demand.

The new facility will help support safe surgery, outpatient procedures and clinical care by giving sterile services teams a modern, fit-for-purpose space with improved air quality and ventilation, dedicated decontamination, packing, sterilisation and dispatch areas, and clear one-way flows for instruments and equipment.

Sterile services teams play an essential behind-the-scenes role in supporting safe surgery, outpatient procedures and clinical care. Around 12,200 surgeries are performed each year at Dunedin Hospital, supported by teams who prepare the instruments and equipment needed for safe care.

The interim unit will support safe, reliable care at Dunedin Hospital now and provide additional capacity while the New Dunedin Hospital is being delivered.

Safety success for Outpatients | Whare Mātūtū

Completing a major construction project is a significant milestone. Doing so with no serious injuries is an achievement well worth celebrating.

Thanks to the shared commitment of Health New Zealand, our construction partners, and the hundreds of people who worked on site, the Outpatients | Whare Mātūtū project has set an impressive benchmark for health, safety and wellbeing.

Safety was a key focus from day one, with Project Director Andrew Holmes championing a strong safety culture throughout the project. Having recovered from a life-changing construction site accident early in his career, Andrew understands first-hand why keeping people safe must always come first.

This outstanding result shows what can be achieved through strong leadership, shared responsibility, and a collective commitment to making sure everyone gets home safely at the end of each day.

🌟 What a special day Friday, 28 August, was for the New Dunedin Hospital | Project Whakatuputupu with the whakawātea and official opening of Outpatients | Whare Mātūtū.

A whakawātea is a ceremony to remove restrictions previously in place during the building phase and ushers in the new beginning for Outpatients | Whare Mātūtū.

The building was officially opened by Health Minister Simeon Brown who cut the ribbon and unveiled the plaque alongside Health New Zealand Board Chair Mark Darrow, Upoko of Te Rūnaka o Ōtākou Edward Ellison and consumer representatives Marie Wales and John Marrable, both of whom have led consumer input into design of the facility.

Whare Mātūtū speaks to a place of care, recovery and continued wellbeing – a space that supports people wherever they are on their health journey 💙

Many thanks to iwi representatives from Te Rūnaka o Ōtākou and Kāti Huirapa Rūnaka ki Puketeraki who led the blessing and provided the name for the facility.

We’re excited to welcome staff and the community to explore Outpatients | Whare Mātūtū during next week’s open days, before the facility opens for patient care next month.

Extra protection for our littlest: Free flu vaccines now available for under 5s

From today, all children aged 6 months up to their fifth birthday can get a free influenza (flu) vaccine.

This change comes as flu continues to cause high rates of illness and hospitalisations in young children this season, with children under five experiencing some of the highest rates of flu-related hospital care.

The flu season started later than usual and is expected to continue, so it's not too late to get vaccinated. The current flu vaccine is also a good match for the flu virus circulating most widely this year.

✅ Free for all children aged 6 months to under 5 years, pregnant women, and people aged 65+
✅ Helps protect against serious illness
✅ Helps protect your family and community.

The flu vaccine is also free for many people with certain medical conditions.

Book at bookmyvaccine.nz or contact your GP, pharmacy, Hauora Māori provider, Pacific health provider, or local immunisation clinic. Many providers also offer walk-in appointments.

Big day for Dunedin! 🎉🏥

Outpatients | Whare Mātūtū, part of the New Dunedin Hospital, has officially opened and will welcome patients from October.

The new outpatient building is a modern facility that will support thousands more appointments and procedures each year, helping deliver care closer to home for communities across Otago and Southland.
