Can you practise counting with your tamariki?

4 — whā
5 — rima
6 — ono

9 — iwa

Why not practise counting your toys together at home? Count how many blocks, cars, books or cuddly toys you have and see if you can count them all in te reo Māori.

tapawhā rite — square
huamanu — oval

We are full of culture at the Kaiapoi Toy Library, and what better time to celebrate this than during Te Wiki o te Reo Māori (Māori Language Week)!

We love seeing our tamariki learning, playing and connecting with our culture through the toys and resources we have available at the Toy Library.

Play is such an important part of learning, and we are proud to support our whānau by providing opportunities to explore te reo Māori, tikanga and the richness of our culture.

Let's continue to celebrate, learn and use te reo Māori together, not just this week, but every day.

This week at Kaiapoi Toy Library we’re learning the names of some colours in te reo Māori.

Can you match the colours to the correct kupu?

whero — red
kōwhai — yellow
kākāriki — green
kikorangi — blue
parakaraka — orange
mā — white
pango — black
māwhero — pink

Why not practise these with your tamariki while you’re playing with their favourite toys? Ask them to find something whero, kākāriki or kikorangi and see how many colours they can name.

This week we are celebrating Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori and what better way to get involved than by learning some simple words we can use every day.

Kei te pēhea koe?

Take a look at our picture and see if you can match the Māori words with how you are feeling.

harikoa — happy
māuiui — sick/unwell
whakamā — shy/embarrassed
riri — angry
ohorere — surprised
mataku — scared
ngenge — tired
pōuri — sad

VOLUNTEER THANK YOU

Today we want to give a HUGE shout-out to our amazing Secretary, Kelly!

Kelly is one of those people who is always behind the scenes making sure everything keeps ticking along at the Kaiapoi Toy Library. From organising meetings and keeping everyone on track, to emails, admin, planning, social media and all the little jobs in between — there is always something happening behind the scenes!

Her dedication, time and willingness to jump in and help wherever needed is something we are incredibly grateful for.

Being a volunteer takes time, energy and commitment, and we are so lucky to have Kelly giving so much of hers to our Toy Library and our community.

Thank you, Kelly, for everything you do!

Today we want to give a HUGE shout-out to our amazing Treasurer, Rachael Brokenshire!

Rachael is always working hard behind the scenes, keeping things organised and making sure everything runs smoothly at the Kaiapoi Toy Library. We are so grateful for the time, effort and dedication she gives to our Toy Library and community.
And of course… we can’t forget our Toy Genius!

Rachael has such a great eye for toys and is always helping with the toy side of things, making sure our collection stays fun, exciting and ready for our members to enjoy!
