โœจ It's almost time to celebrate the people who make sport and active recreation thrive across the Nelson region! โœจ

From 1 September, nominations and ticket sales for the 2026 Nelson Sports + Recreation Awards (Friday, 27 November 2026) will be available on the Sport Tasman website.

Now is the perfect time to start thinking about the athletes, teams, coaches, officials, volunteers, clubs, and community champions who have made a positive impact this year. Help us recognise those who inspire, lead, and make a difference in our sporting community.

A huge thank you to our sponsors, partners, and supporters for making these awards possible. We can't wait to celebrate another outstanding year of sport and recreation with you!

As we celebrate Matariki, we're reminded of the importance of connection, reflection, and coming together as a community.

โœจ Matariki herenga mahara โ€“ binding of memories of loved ones passed.
๐Ÿค Matariki herenga tฤngata โ€“ binding of people.
๐ŸŒ Matariki herenga waka โ€“ bringing together people from all backgrounds.
๐Ÿฝ๏ธ Puanga kai rau โ€“ an abundance of food and time to share kai.
โค๏ธ Puanga tangata rau โ€“ celebrating the abundance of whฤnau and friends by spending time with those who matter most.
๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ Puanga tฤkaro rau โ€“ a Sport Tasman twist; embracing the opportunity to play, be active, and enjoy movement together.

Whether it's a walk with whฤnau, a game in the backyard, trying a new activity, or simply spending time with your community, we hope you find moments of connection, joy, and wellbeing this Matariki.

More than 280 Year 5 and 6 ฤkonga from across the region came together in Motueka to celebrate movement, culture, connection and fun. Through traditional Mฤori games (taonga tฤkaro), students explored important values such as whanaungatanga, kotahitanga, manaakitanga and aroha.

A special shoutout to the amazing Year 7 and 8 Physical Activity Leaders who stepped up to organise and lead the day with confidence and enthusiasm. ๐Ÿ‘

A huge thank you to Motueka South School, Lauretta Haskell, participating schools, whฤnau and everyone who helped make the event possible.

What started as a pilot in 2023 has grown into a much-loved event that continues to bring our communities together through play, leadership and learning.

โœจ Matariki reminds us to reflect, connect and look ahead with hope โ€” and the Matariki Games do exactly that.

Itโ€™s Youth Week ๐Ÿ™Œ

This week celebrates the contribution young people make to our communities across Aotearoa, and recognises the mana, perspectives, and leadership they bring every day.

This yearโ€™s theme is:
โ€œOur voices matter. We deserve to be heard.โ€ ๐Ÿ’ฌ

At Sport Tasman, we believe participant voice matters. Whether itโ€™s shaping programmes, creating inclusive opportunities, or building stronger local communities through sport and recreation โ€” young people should be part of the conversation.
