A huge shout-out to two of our amazing West Melton School stars, Deanna and Jenson, for their awesome appearance on What Now! They recently took to the track to teach the presenters a thing or two in We Went Head-to-Head at Grass Karts!. We are so proud of how brilliantly they represented our school community with their impressive skills, confidence, and sportsmanship. Check out the video to watch them in action!

Congratulations to the West Melton Movers who placed 3rd in a very large and very competitive division at the New Zealand Schools Hip Competition on 22 July at Rangiruru College. The team performed a very clean, energetic and strong routine and absolutely shone on stage! A highlight of the day was seeing how well our students represented our school by supporting and encouraging other dancers after their performances. Fantastic dancing and superb attitudes made for a very successful day. Tino pai kōtiro mā- well done girls!

West Melton Waves- Waterpolo Term 2 wrap up

What a fantastic Term 2 it has been for the West Melton Waves!!

A huge thank you to our amazing sponsors—Cunningham Builders, MTF Finance Hornby, and Xteriorscapes Landscape Architects for your support in kitting us out in our flash new hooded branded towels- making us look the part all while keeping us warm to and from games.

Term 2 saw us take the leap to B grade where we faced some very strong opposition but the team was ready for the challenge. After two very tough matches against Casebrook & Chinsnallwood we managed a dominating win against Breens Battleships 15-3 and continued to improve each game. Finishing the term with 4 wins, a very thrilling draw against St Andrews and 2 losses at the start of the term.

Each player has consistently improved their own individual skills over the term but what has been truly impressive is how we grow each week as a team.

This term will see us continue in B grade each Monday night at the amazing new Parakiore pool, backed up with 6 training sessions on a Sunday arvo at Selwyn pool to prepare us for South island tournament in early November.

Waterpolo is such an amazing sport and I personally have really enjoyed watching my boys and other children thrive in this thrilling sport all while being warm inside watching…. No cold Saturday side-lines in water polo!!!

In term 4 we plan on creating a second Waterpolo team to play in the social Friday comp to prepare for 2027 this will be made up of any Year 6s or Year 7s who would like to be a part of the 2027 team please do get in touch if you have any questions or are keen to join.

Thanks

Hannah & Charlotte

🗺️ 2026 School Roll Call 🗺️

It’s time to see who is making the journey to the 2026 Koru Games! 🙌

With 74 South Island schools confirmed across 510+ teams (and counting), this year’s event is officially our biggest Koru Games on record! 🏆

From local schools right here in Selwyn, to those travelling from across the South Island, the commitment from our school community has been incredible.

The furthest travelling school will make a journey of over 450km to compete at the Koru Games, a huge commitment and an awesome reminder of the value schools place on creating these opportunities for their tamariki. 💚

A massive thank you to every school, teacher, coach, supporter, and student who continues to make the Koru Games such a special event!

Entries close this Friday (24 July), and there are still spots available in selected sports. If your school is looking to join the action, now is the time to secure your place!

⏰ Two months to go until the South Island comes together in Selwyn. Bring on Koru Games 2026! 🏆

Harry Gradwell Karting Success
Harry Gradwell (Y4) represented West Melton School over the holidays at the New Zealand National Schools Karting Championship.
He finished second overall, a huge achievement against New Zealand’s best Cadet kart drivers.

He then competed again in karting over the holidays, this time winning the Bob Brown Memorial Trophy. This trophy has previously been won by the likes of Marcus Armstrong, Louis Sharp and Jacob Douglas, big names in NZ Motorsport.
Congratulations, Harry, on your incredible success. We can't wait to see where your karting journey takes you next. Ka rawe!

Matariki Celebration
A huge thank you to all our whānau who joined us yesterday for our Matariki Breakfast. It was wonderful to come together as a school community to celebrate Matariki and the Māori New Year.
We loved seeing so many stay to join us in the Kaurapa, where our ākonga proudly shared their learning about Matariki through waiata, kapa haka, and presentations about the significance of this special time of year.
The highlight of the morning was undoubtedly everyone joining together to perform the Matariki Macarena! The smiles, laughter, and sense of togetherness captured the true spirit of Matariki – a time to reflect, celebrate, and connect with one another.
Thank you to everyone who helped make the morning such a success. It was a fitting way to finish the term and celebrate the strong sense of community that makes our school so special. Ka mau te wehi, everyone! ✨🌟
