West Melton Volunteer Fire Brigade

West Melton Volunteer Fire Brigade page for the West Melton Fire Brigade We are based on Weedons Ross Road next to the BP. We were first established in 1964.

The West Melton Volunteer Rural Fire Force (WMVRFF) is a rural fire force funded and managed by Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ). Prior to the amalgamation of the NZ Fire Service and Rural Fire in July 2017, we were funded by the Selwyn District Council. The FENZ merger joined together urban and rural brigades, opening up additional resources, funding, and combining governing legislation. We

have currently 16 dedicated and passionate firefighters. We attend 60-80 calls a year and are a valued FENZ resource, attending fires all over the Selwyn area if required. We are currently fully staffed and are not recruiting, but welcome any questions on fire status, fire behaviour, basically anything to do with flame you will get our interest! We're also available on request for social events, and are happy to attend school or club events to promote fire safety or just to let the kids ride in a fire engine when we can. As a rural fire force we don't do extrication (jaws of life) or BA (breathing apparatus) but we specialise in controlling running vegetation fires of all types. We carry a range of pumps, hose and equipment to effectively achieve this.

Busy 24hrs for our crew with couple of burnoffs over night and then large job down intake Rd today.

Please be careful in these winds

Update @ 1615hrs - We are in attendance at a large fire in Selwyn Road, Rolleston. Please stay away from the area to allow our crews to work safely to get this fire under control.

Fire and Emergency are in attendance at multiple wildfires across the Canterbury District.

We are currently at a large wildfire outside of the Hawarden township. This fire was reported to us at 14:18hrs. We have 16 fire appliances on scene and 1 helicopter on route. The fire is not threatening the township. The fire is not contained or controlled at this stage. Please stay away from the area and allow our crews to work safely.

We are also in attendance at a fire in Mount Culverden, where 8 fire appliances are currently trying to control a wildfire.

We have 7 crews in attendance at a fire near Waiau and 14 crews at a fire in Gebbies Valley. These fires are under control with crews working to make sure they are fully extinguished.

We have been in attendance at a scrub fire near Intake Rd, Kirwee since 08.35. Crews have worked hard to get this fire under control and are now making sure it is fully extinguished.

It is important that anyone who has had a fire in the past few weeks checks on them NOW to make sure they are fully extinguished!

National Volunteer Week – Celebrating the People behind the uniform.

This National Volunteer Week, we want to recognise and thank the incredible volunteers who make up the West Melton Volunteer Fire Brigade.

Our members come from all walks of life, balancing families, full-time jobs, studies, and businesses, yet they still make the commitment to answer the call whenever our community needs them. Whether it's a structure fire, medical emergency, motor vehicle crash, vegetation fire, or public assistance, they are there 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Behind every response are countless hours of training, equipment maintenance, community engagement, fundraising, and dedication to ensuring we can provide the best possible service.

We also want to acknowledge the families, employers, and supporters who make volunteering possible. Your understanding and encouragement allow our members to leave at a moment's notice and serve the wider community. Special mention to the families of our volunteers who pick up the pieces when the siren goes up, who hold things down at home, to the meals and special occasions missed, it means a lot to have your support.

To every volunteer firefighter past and present – thank you for your commitment, professionalism, and selfless service. Your willingness to give your time makes our community a safer place for everyone.

If you see one of our volunteers this week, take a moment to say thank you. It means more than you know.

With a strong wind watch in place for parts of Canterbury this evening β€” if you have a burn pile, now is the time to check it is fully extinguished. πŸ’¨πŸ”₯

Even fires that appear out can reignite in windy conditions and spread quickly through vegetation.

βœ… Soak it with water
βœ… Rake out the ashes
βœ… Soak it again
βœ… Check that it's cool before leaving

Please take the time to make your burn pile safe and help prevent unwanted vegetation fires across our district.
