New PNG Power Board sworn in with a stern mandate to resolve issues

Today, the PPL Boardroom in Hohola officially welcomed the newly appointed Board of Directors for PNG Power Limited (PPL). The ceremony is a push by the national government to stabilise the state-owned power utility.

The newly inducted board members include:
• Mr Noel Mobiha
• Mr. John Wau
• Ms Lorna McPherson
• Dr Clement Waine (PhD)
• Mr Marlen Brunskill

The official proceedings commenced with the arrival of key government figures, including the Minister responsible for PNG Power Ltd, Hon. Richard Maru, BTech, CPA, MBA, OBE, alongside the Managing Director of Kumul Consolidated Holdings (KCH), Prof. David Kavanamur, PhD, as well as representatives from the media and invited dignitaries.

Minister Hon. Richard Maru directed the newly sworn-in PNG Power board to achieve financial and operational stability.

POWER OUTAGE NOTICE: UPPER HIGHLANDS REGION

​Please be advised that an unplanned power outage is currently affecting customers in parts of the Upper Highlands following an unexpected trip on our main exporting transmission lines (L507, L514, and L515) due to a transient fault on Tuesday, 15th September 2026.

​Our technical teams are on site, with line patrols underway to clear the transmission corridor and safely restore power as quickly as possible.

​Affected Areas & Feeders:
🔴 Dobel: Feeders 1, 2, 3 & 4 (All customers)
🔴 Kudjip: Feeders 1 & 2

PUBLIC NOTICE: RAMU SYSTEM POWER OUTAGE

PNG Power wishes to advise our valued customers that a Total System Outage occurred on the Ramu Grid today at 1:27 PM (1327hrs).

The outage occurred following the tripping of Ramu Units 1 & 3, which subsequently led to all remaining units tripping off line.

Affected Areas

• Entire Ramu Grid (including Lae, Madang, Goroka, Mt. Hagen, and surrounding areas)
Current Status & Restoration Efforts.

• Root Cause: Investigation is currently underway to establish the exact cause of the trip.

• Restoration Progress: Partial system restoration is actively in progress. Power supply from Baiune to Lae is currently being restored.

• Restoration work is also underway across the Ramu, Himitovi, Mt. Hagen, and Madang sections.

All sectors will be synchronized back to the main Ramu system once individual partial restorations are completed.

Technical Teams are currently deployed across key substations to facilitate a swift and safe restoration.

We apologize for the inconvenience caused and will provide further updates as power is restored across the grid.

Emergency Outage Notice – Waigani Feeder 4

PNG Power is advising all our Waigani Feeder 4 customers that there will be an emergency maintenance work to take place to carry out the following work.

Task: Technical Team to replace a corroded High Voltage and Low Voltage Steel Pole at Obuta Cres, Gerehu Stage 2.

Date: Friday 11th September 2026
Time: 11:00am to 1:00pm

Affected Areas: Morata Stage 1 and 2, Gerehu Stage 2 and 3, Rainbow, NRI and UPNG.

We kindly ask all affected customers to use your standby generators or alternate power sources during these periods.

While PNG Power continues to work through immense challenges to maintain the electricity grid, public attitudes towards shared infrastructure still need to change, even as calls for more reliable power grow.

This video captures someone who chose to light a fire directly next to a 22kV power pole at Lumluvur on the Kokopo grid. This dangerous behavior threatens to damage the foundation and shut down the entire feeder, cutting off power to whole communities and forcing PNG Power to bear yet another unnecessary repair cost.

It is time we change our attitudes toward public property. Let us take responsibility and do our best to protect and care for these vital assets so they can serve us reliably.

RAMU GRID SYSTEM UNPLANNED OUTAGE

Our technical teams are currently responding to an outage impacting parts of the Ramu Grid System following an unexpected system disturbance.

Incident Breakdown:

Incident Time: 2:09 PM

Root Cause & Fault Location: Protection logs at the Dobel Substation indicate a system fault on Line L515, localized at approximately 24.3 km out. The exact root cause remains under active investigation by our engineering teams.

Current Statues:

Dobel Substation: Feeders 1, 2, 3, and 4 currently offline.

Kudjip Substation: Feeders 1 and 2 currently offline.

Himitovi Substation: Feeder 2 placed on load shedding; Feeder 3 undergoing investigation following a suspected trip.

Line L506: Load dropped from 4.0 MW to 0.0 MW (line physically intact).

Physical line inspections confirm Line L506 is secure. The Paunda transmission line remains fully operational, maintaining uninterrupted power supply to Mendi and Ialibu.

Transmission and Switching teams have mobilized to conduct physical line clearances along the affected corridor.

Power will be restored sequentially once the fault zone is safely isolated.
