Tuloy-tuloy ang ACCLAsang Bayan! Makibeki, Wag Mashokot! โœŠ๐Ÿ”ปโค๏ธโ€๐Ÿ”ฅ

Tayoโ€™y dumalo at magpadalo para sa isang Educational Discussion about The LGBT Situationer in the Philippines and q***r short films and cultural performances!

More often than not, is filled with wonderful stories and testimonies of courage, acceptance, and living life openly. While these stories matter and open up meaningful conversations, the truth is, coming out remains to be a privilege that not every individual is able to do.

Every q***r individual's coming out journey is shaped by their family, culture, socio-economic status, and personal circumstances. For some, coming out may not feel safe, possible, or right just yet. After all, there is no deadline for self-discovery and it is absolutely not required to provide details and explanation on one's identity.

It is absolutely okay to be in the closet and being inside does not make your identity less valid. Your experiences, feelings, and truth remain to be valid whether they are known only by your trusted circle or only by you. Pride is not measured solely by visibility, but sometimes it is found through quiet measures of self-acceptance.

Being in the closet and protecting one's well-being is a brave thing to do for self-preservation. Wherever you are on your journey, you deserve kindness, respect, and the freedom to move at your own pace. Moreover, as a reminder to the general public, one's closet is not ours to open.

Much like the vibrant spectrum of identities that make up the UP Baguio community, science thrives when people bring their authentic selves into the spaces they occupy.

Meet Assistant Professor Reymark C. Ereje of the Department of Physical Sciences. He earned his Master of Science in Chemistry (Organic Chemistry) from Chulalongkorn University and his Bachelorโ€™s degree in Chemistry from the University of the Philippines Visayas. His research focuses on Synthetic Organic Chemistry, Medicinal Chemistry, and Small Molecule Drug Discoveryโ€”fields dedicated to understanding and creating compounds that can ultimately improve lives.

For Reymark, being an out and proud gay scientist is a privilegeโ€”one that many members of the LGBTQIA+ community around the world are still denied due to discrimination and exclusion. โ€œThe stigma of always proving yourself as excellent to compensate for being gay is a notion that I needed to overcome growing up, and even to this day,โ€ he said.

As both an educator and administrator, Reymark views his position as an opportunity to contribute to a broader struggle for equality and dignity. At UP Baguio, he advocates for fair treatment, livable wages, and safe working environments, while fostering a culture that values people for their abilities and character rather than their identities.

Reymark emphasizes that science and social responsibility are inseparable. The pursuit of knowledge must ultimately serve the people, especially those whose voices are often unheard. He encourages fellow q***r scientists to stand firm in pursuing principled, people-centered science. โ€œWe continue to fight and speak up not just for ourselves, but especially for the voiceless members of our society,โ€ he said.

โ€œLet us keep doing our best to inspire the next generation. Let us show the young gay kid that they can be a future chemist, prove to the little le***an that they can be mathematicians, and inspire that one youthful child who dreams of being the first trans person to walk on the moon.โ€

Looking ahead, he dreams of a future where LGBTQ+ individuals can express their love without fear of persecution, enjoy their rights without having their intentions questioned, and simply live the lives they deserve. As he puts it, he quotes Daisy Macapanpan: โ€œAng Kabaklaan ang pag-asa ng Kilusan.โ€
