๐—ก๐—˜๐—ช๐—ฆ | Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance, MMSU team up for clean energy future

A new partnership between industry and academia is set to drive renewable energy innovation as the Philippine Solar and Storage Energy Alliance (PSSEA) and Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on July 28 at Crowne Plaza Manila Galleria, Ortigas. The two institutions will work together to advance research, technology development, and capacity building to support the countryโ€™s growing solar and energy storage sector.

The MOU was signed during the PSSEA Annual Assembly by MMSU President Virgilio Julius P. Manzano, Jr. and PSSEA President and Board Member Jose Rafael Mendoza. The signing was witnessed by PSSEA Chairperson Maria Theresa Capellan and MMSU Center for Affiliated Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency Conservation (MMSU-CARE) Project Leader Engr. Thomas Ubiรฑa.

The partnership establishes a framework for cooperation in renewable energy, particularly in the solar and energy storage sectors. It covers joint research initiatives, technical studies, innovation programs, training activities, stakeholder engagement, and knowledge sharing to support the countryโ€™s transition toward cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

Under the agreement, MMSU-CARE will lead research initiatives, engineering studies, system performance analysis, and the development of technical assessment methods for solar photovoltaic (PV) systems. The center will also conduct diagnostic surveys, field validation, performance testing, and documentation of research outputs to strengthen renewable energy applications.

Meanwhile, PSSEA will help connect the university with industry partners, provide technical data and operational insights, support the dissemination of research findings, and promote the adoption of industry standards and best practices in renewable energy deployment.

Both institutions will also collaborate in strengthening solar PV technical standards, supporting the establishment and operation of a Solar Technology Testing Center (STTC), conducting technical workshops and stakeholder consultations, and ensuring that joint activities align with national policies and professional standards.

โ€œThrough this partnership with industry, we can generate innovations, strengthen technical capabilities, and prepare future professionals who will help accelerate the countryโ€™s transition to clean and sustainable energy,โ€ President Manzano said.

For PSSEA, the partnership with MMSU strengthens industry-academic collaboration by connecting renewable energy experts with researchers and learners and promoting knowledge exchange, technical advancement, and the adoption of best practices in the solar and energy storage sectors.

PSSEA is a non-stock, non-profit industry association composed of stakeholders in the solar and energy storage sector. It promotes industry collaboration, policy advocacy, and the implementation of best practices to support renewable energy development in the Philippines.

MMSU-CARE, a unit under the National Bioenergy Research and Innovation Center (NBERIC), leads the universityโ€™s initiatives in renewable energy research, energy efficiency, and sustainable technology development, supporting national priorities and community-based innovations.

Developed by the Affiliated Renewable Energy Center (AREC) at Mariano Marcos State University (MMSU) and funded by the Department of Energy (DOE), ARECGIS is a mobile and web-based mapping system.

But itโ€™s much more than just software. Itโ€™s a tool to prove that small, everyday, non-commercial solar setupsโ€”the ones on residential roofs and local farmsโ€”actually add up to something massive. Every single household we map brings the Philippines closer to the DOEโ€™s goal of a 50% renewable energy power generation mix by 2040.

The Wins: Families proudly sharing how their hybrid solar systems have slashed their monthly electric bills and changed the way they think about energy.

The Hurdles: Neighbors opening up about the confusion of net metering paperwork, system maintenance, and trying to make sense of complex utility billing.

Itโ€™s these raw, real conversations that keep us grounded. Technology is only as good as its impact on the people using it, and we are committed to making sure our communities have the guidance and support they need to truly thrive under the sun.

๐Œ๐Œ๐’๐” ๐‚๐€๐‘๐„ ๐…๐ˆ๐„๐‹๐ƒ ๐–๐Ž๐‘๐Š๐’ | Just wrapped up an eye-opening few weeks on the road! We spent time traveling through Sarrat, Piddig, Dingras, Solsona, and Marcos in Ilocos Norte to conduct a field inventory of renewable energy systems.

Itโ€™s inspiring to see so many households taking control of their energy to reduce electricity costs. Many families we spoke to are seeing real benefits like lower bills and improved energy awareness. Most folks with solar PV setups are highly satisfied experiencing the efficiency of solar power firsthand, and we noticed quite a high number of existing hybrid systems out there.

But itโ€™s not all sunshine; we also heard real frustrations from the community:

The Paperwork: People are struggling with application processing, system compatibility with utility requirements, and scratching their heads over net metering billing mechanisms.

The Tech Gap: We noticed that limited technical knowledge among users, a lack of routine maintenance, and improper system sizing are causing inefficient installations that reduce expected energy output.

This trip reminded our team that installing the technology is only half the battle. Results from our inventory clearly indicate a need for stronger information dissemination and local government support to promote renewable energy systems and net metering programs.

Next up: uploading all these stories and data to the database, and planning some much-needed public seminar on solar PV systems to help bridge that knowledge gap!
