Typhoons turn rain into a destructive force that disrupts vulnerable communitiesโ€™ access to water. Lithos Manufacturing challenges this irony by developing a cost-effective device for collecting, storing and filtering rainwater for use in sanitation and hygiene.

Created by chemical engineer Eleanor M. Olegario, each ML Foldable Tank can carry 1,000 liters of water, which is drawn from rooftops using a system of pipes. The water is processed through a nanotechnology-based Zeramic filter, which neutralizes acid, absorbs heavy metals and filters out organic materials to sanitation-safe levels.

Olegario received the National Award for Inventors from the World Intellectual Property Organization in 2024. Her invention was a winner of IPOPHLโ€™s Socially Relevant Technologies Project in 2023 and was a finalist at the 2025 Filipinnovation Awards.

IPOPHL is strengthening ties with the Department of Information and Communications Technology - DICT to boost patent examination expertise.

This week, Director General Brigitte da Costa-Villaluz and IPOPHL officials met with DICT Secretary Henry Rhoel Aguda to discuss future training and continuing education in ICT for patent examiners. Both agencies also agreed to explore collaborations on IP and innovation initiatives supported by the DICT.

This week, IPOPHL scales up its capacity in examining blockchain technologies.

In collaboration with the Japan External Trade Organization and the Japan Patent Office, IPOPHL is holding the โ€œSubstantive Examination Training on Blockchain Technologyโ€ from 15 to 18 September 2025 at the IPOPHL Multi-Purpose Hall.

The training underscores IPOPHLโ€™s commitment to equipping patent examiners with the tools and insights needed to assess patent applications in emerging technologies and the fast-evolving field of blockchain.
