ICYMI | Inter-Agency Monitoring Body (IAMB) Regular Meeting

The Inter-Agency Monitoring Body (IAMB) of the Galoc Field and Area Development (GFAD) Project, chaired by the Commander of the Maritime Environmental Protection Command (MEPCOM), conducted its regular meeting on 28 August 2026 at Canvas Hotel, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan.

The meeting was attended by members and representatives from the Palawan Council for Sustainable Development (PCSD), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Environmental Management Bureau, Department of Energy (DOE), Provincial Government of Palawan, NPG and MEPG Palawan.

The Galoc Field under the GFAD Project is an offshore petroleum development project situated approximately 290 meters deep and more than 51 kilometers from the nearest island in Northwestern Palawan.

The IAMB serves as a validation body for NPG’s environmental compliance and provides a platform for the coordinated resolution of concerns, including jurisdictional matters involving the enforcement of environmental regulations and standards.

During the meeting, the IAMB reviewed and discussed matters concerning the coordinated and streamlined monitoring and validation of the GFAD Project’s compliance with approvals and environmental requirements issued by the DENR, PCSD, and the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). The body also provided guidance to the Inter-Agency Monitoring Team (IAMT) in strengthening the project’s adherence to environmental laws, regulations, and standards.

The IAMB also approved projects that support and benefit the municipalities of Busuanga, Linapacan, and Culion, Palawan, particularly initiatives that contribute to local livelihood, education, and tourism.

Through sustained inter-agency coordination and environmental monitoring, the IAMB through MEPCOMs leadership ensures that measures for the protection and preservation of Palawan’s marine environment are upheld while supporting initiatives that promote sustainable livelihoods, education, and tourism for local communities.

On National Heroes Day, the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), through the Marine Environmental Protection Command (MEPCOM), joins the nation in honoring the brave men and women whose sacrifices, courage, and unwavering love for country helped shape the freedom and opportunities we enjoy today.

Their legacy reminds us that heroism is not measured only by extraordinary acts of sacrifice, but also by the everyday courage to serve, protect, and do what is right for our fellow Filipinos.

As public servants, the Philippine Coast Guard through the MEPCOM draw inspiration from our heroes as we continue our commitment to protect lives, safeguard our marine environment, maintain peace and order, and serve with honor, integrity, and dedication.

May this day remind us that nation-building is a shared responsibility and that every act of honest service, compassion, and patriotism contributes to a stronger and better Philippines.

Strengthening Coral Reef Restoration Efforts in Palawan! Look! The Marine Environmental Protection Group–Palawan, together with representatives from the DOE, DENR, PENRO, PCSD, NPG Pty Ltd. (Matahio Energy), Western Philippines University (WPU), and Palawan State University (PalSU), participated in the two-day training seminar “Sustainable Coral Garden Establishment in Palawan.”

Spearheaded by the Galoc Field and Development (GFAD) Project, the training was led by Dr. Benjamin J. Gonzales, Senior Supervising Consultant of Ben Gonzales Environmental Research and Management Consultancy (BGERMC).

The seminar focused on enhancing participants’ knowledge and practical skills in coral reef rehabilitation and restoration, with emphasis on sustainable coral gardening techniques. Participants learned about different coral gardening dome designs and artificial structures, as well as proper techniques for coral propagation, attachment, spacing, handling, and transplantation.
The training also featured a hands-on practical exercise, allowing participants to experience the process of attaching and planting coral fragments onto dome structures.

Beyond technical knowledge, the activity strengthened collaboration among government agencies, the private sector, and academic institutions working together toward a common goal: the conservation, restoration, and protection of Palawan’s valuable marine ecosystems.

Together, let us grow corals, restore reefs, and protect Palawan’s blue future.
