Happy Pride!

The Embassy of the Netherlands participated in the Stockholm Pride Parade today, together with representatives from other EU embassies and cultural institutes.

It is a colorful celebration of human rights, of everyone’s right to love whomever they choose, and of the opportunity to live an open and authentic life.

While Stockholm Pride is taking place, World Pride is being celebrated in Amsterdam. At a time when LGBTIQ+ rights are facing increasing opposition around the world, it is especially important to come together and show solidarity.

Together, we will continue to combat polarization and protect equal rights for all.

Throwback to our meeting at Almedalen in June with members from the 21st Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This meeting was facilitated and hosted by Ukrainska Hubben.

It was a valuable opportunity to hear more about the situation at the front and to learn about creative and innovative solutions that are developed as the war continues to change and evolve. We also heard stories that testify of the bravery and stamina of the men and women that defend the freedom of Ukraine, and of Europe at large.

We spoke extensively about the importance of international law and the need for accountability. Many thanks to major Maksym Horbatiuk for sharing his firsthand account of witnessing war crimes at the frontlines, during the seminar we hosted the following day at Almedalen.

The Netherlands, together with its partners, will continue to support Ukraine and help ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Because without justice, there can be no lasting peace.

A 'Sommar i P1' recommendation:

Today's speaker in Swedish radio program Sommar i P1 is Kajsa Ollongren, former Minister of Defence (2022-2024) and deputy Prime-Minister and Minister of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (2017-2022) of the Netherlands.

She speaks about how she was woken in the middle of the night on 24 February 2022, and, as the newly appointed Minister for Defence, recognizing this as a defining moment in history. She also shares what she believes Europe should do more to keep us free and safe in these times of war and crisis.

Ms. Kajsa Ollongren has been the EU Special Representative (EUSR) for Human Rights since 2025. Recently, she was appointed secretary general of the European External Action Service, the EU’s diplomatic service.

Just a month ago, Ms. Ollongren was the keynote speaker at our Almedalen seminar on accountability for war crimes committed in Ukraine. You can still watch the recording of this seminar (English/Swedish) here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nkJH3h_qpro.

Today, on 4 May, the Netherlands commemorates all those who have lost their lives in the Kingdom of the Netherlands or anywhere else in the world in war situations or during peacekeeping operations since the outbreak of the Second World War.

Therefore, on this day, we observe two minutes of silence for all who have given their lives for our freedom. The embassy in Stockholm will display the flag at half-mast.

Tomorrow, 5 May, the Netherlands celebrates its freedom on Liberation Day. A peaceful and thriving society can only exist in a country free from war, where human rights are upheld. The Netherlands continues to stand for democracy and the rule of law.

In a time of geopolitical change, it remains essential to cooperate for peace and security in Europe. The Second World War reminds us that the cost of inaction is huge.

Are we truly prepared for a crisis?

This week, our embassy marked King’s Day with a focus on resilience and preparedness. Swedish State Secretary Johan Berggren shared how Sweden is strengthening civil defence—from shelters and emergency services to supply chains, cybersecurity, and countering disinformation. One message stood out: preparedness may be costly, but vulnerability costs more.

Ambassador Joost Reintjes highlighted that resilience is a shared responsibility. Strong cooperation—between government, companies and civil society—is essential. The Netherlands and Sweden continue to learn from each other, while initiatives like “Denk Vooruit” help prepare citizens at home.

With war ongoing in Ukraine and elsewhere, the importance of readiness is clear. We stand prepared—and we do so together with our partners and allies.

Lang leve de koning.

Today King Willem-Alexander celebrates his 59th birthday. It also marks King’s Day, our national day celebration with music, flea markets and connections across the country.

The Royal Family joined celebrations in Dokkum in the province of Friesland today.

On behalf of the Embassy team and the Dutch community in Sweden we warmly congratulate His Majesty King Willem Alexander.
