Last year’s federal budget reconciliation legislation—referred to by some as the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, but by many by its legislative bill number, H.R.1—included changes to Medicaid eligibility and enrollment that will impact as many as one and a half to two million people in New York State.

Beginning January 1, 2027, some people seeking Medicaid coverage or a renewal of their existing coverage will be required to prove they are working, volunteering, or going to school in order to qualify for Medicaid.
