🚨 ALEDO MAN SENTENCED TO 15 YEARS AFTER SHOOTING AT POLICE — THE BRODY ESP CASE
📍 Aledo, Illinois | Mercer County
A domestic-disturbance call in Aledo led to a struggle with police, a gunshot and four attempted-murder charges. Now, 23-year-old Brody Esp has received a 15-year prison sentence following guilty pleas to two felony offenses, according to an October 26, 2026, report from WRMJ. Here’s what the published reporting establishes.
🚔 HOW IT STARTED
On January 29, 2025, officers from the Aledo Police Department and Mercer County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported domestic disturbance in the 400 block of Southeast 11th Avenue, in Aledo’s Buttonwood housing addition.
Esp was 22 at the time. According to the police account reported by local news outlets, officers were investigating and trying to separate him from other people inside the residence when he refused to cooperate. Officers then attempted to arrest him for obstructing their duties, and police said he physically fought with them.
🔫 A CONCEALED HANDGUN AND ONE SHOT
Police said officers ultimately secured Esp in handcuffs. Their account also states that, during the process of detaining him, he threatened to kill officers, produced a concealed semiautomatic handgun and fired one round in their direction.
Officers gained control of the weapon. No one was injured by the gunshot, and no property damage from the shot was reported. Esp did sustain minor injuries during his arrest and was taken to MercyOne Genesis in Aledo. He was released from the hospital February 2 and transferred to the Mercer County Jail.
⚖️ THE ORIGINAL CHARGES
Esp initially faced:
• Four counts of attempted first-degree murder. • Aggravated discharge of a fi***rm. • Threatening a public official. • Resisting arrest/obstructing the duties of a police officer.
At his February 3, 2025, court appearance, he was denied pretrial release, and a fitness evaluation was ordered.
📅 WHAT HAPPENED IN COURT?
In March 2025, Esp was ruled fit to stand trial. WRMJ later reported that he entered not-guilty pleas that month.
The case went through multiple continuances. A July 2025 report attributed a delay to the defense, with the next pretrial conference scheduled for August 18. By February 2026, another pretrial conference had been continued to April 13, and Esp remained in the Mercer County Jail.
🔒 THE SENTENCE
According to WRMJ’s October 26 report, Esp pleaded guilty in Mercer County Circuit Court to:
• Aggravated discharge of a fi***rm at a peace officer, a Class X felony: 15 years in prison. • Threatening a public official, a Class 3 felony: five years in prison.
The sentences run concurrently, meaning they run at the same time. The reported prison term is therefore 15 years, rather than adding the sentences together for 20.
📌 WHAT STILL ISN’T CLEAR?
The sentencing report identifies those two convictions but does not explain the final disposition of the four original attempted-murder counts. It also does not provide the plea agreement, an explanation for the charging outcome or an expected release date. Those details should not be assumed.
The initial reports also do not clearly explain the precise sequence of the handcuffing and access to the concealed gun. Without additional records or footage, that remains a question the published police account does not fully answer.
