Today’s Allentown business highlight is Multinational Sumitomo (SHI) Cryogenics of America, Inc. ⚙️👩‍🏭

From mom-and-pop shops to generational, global companies, Allentown is host to companies of all sizes and industries. Multinational Sumitomo (SHI) Cryogenics of America, Inc. is one such company, helping to redefine the super-cooling industry and continually develop cutting-edge technology with generational impact. The history of Sumitomo stretches back to the birth of Masatomo Sumitomo, the founder of the company in 1585. While not a cryogenic company at the time, Masatomo created a company with specific business principles that would transcend time, allowing the company to adapt over centuries into the leading cryogenics equipment manufacturer they are today.

Adapting through the centuries from herbal medicine to copper refining, machinery production and eventually adding cryogenics, Sumitomo’s cryogenics business was officially established in 1962. In 2002 Sumitomo acquired IGC-APD Cryogenics, formerly an Air Products subsidiary which pioneered the current generation cryopump in 1976, leading to Sumitomo’s presence in Allentown. With dozens of patents, Sumitomo continually refines its technology. You can find their cryocoolers & cryopumps in medical devices from MRI machines to particle therapy, while semiconductor technology in your smartphones and tablets utilizes them as well.

Their machines don’t just cool, they supercool liquids. They can cool liquids to a few degrees above absolute zero (0 Kelvin: the cessation of all molecular motion or -459.67°F). These machines give scientists the ability to study physics in a way that traditional means cannot.
Sumitomo is on the cutting edge of technology, and their Research & Development (R&D) lab is at the forefront of the industry. With the development of quantum mechanics, quantum computing and more, their technology is poised to usher in the future of technology.

Sumitomo has a long history of business and CEO Dr. Mark Derakhshan says their Allentown location at 1833 Vultee Street has been a great location to headquarter their cutting-edge R&D to explore the future of cooling and upcoming technologies. Check out some photos of their operation below!
