We want to give a huge shoutout to our dispatch team for their hard work, dedication, and professionalism over the past few days.

When Wednesday night's storm abruptly hit, chaos quickly ensued. Between 8:00 p.m. and midnight alone, our dispatch center received 416 calls. These calls ranged from power outages, downed trees and wires, alarms, and traffic accidents to a wide variety of storm-related concerns. One caller even reported that “the entire backside of Park Lanes just fell off.”

Through the early morning hours of Thursday and continuing until approximately 2:00 p.m., our team handled another 375 calls. During this time, many frustrated and confused residents looked to us for guidance and assistance.

Over that 18-hour period, dispatchers managed nearly 800 calls for service, handled more than 820 radio transmissions, and made 109 outgoing calls to assisting agencies, utility companies, and other partner organizations.

And that doesn't even include the officers stopping by the dispatch center for paperwork, court-related documents, and notary services, or the citizens coming in and out of the lobby to file reports, request records, and seek assistance.

It was certainly a hectic and challenging day, but our dispatch team was the glue that held everything together. Their calm demeanor, professionalism, and commitment to serving our community played a vital role in helping keep our city running as smoothly as possible during a difficult situation.

Amherst Bicycle Rodeo 2026!

This past Saturday, the Amherst Police Department held its annual bicycle rodeo focused on Bicycle Safety Education! Families who joined us enjoyed delicious pizza and snacks, and kids walked away with bicycle helmets, t-shirts, and goodie bags. Plus, every registered child was entered into a drawing to win a brand-new bicycle!

A huge thank you to everyone in the community who came out to support and participate.

We also want to extend our deepest gratitude to the incredible sponsors and partners who made this event possible:

Be advised we have several wires and trees down blocking roadways all throughout the city. Us along with Amherst Fire Department are working as fast as we can to assess damages and clear roadways. Electric and street department personnel have been advised and will be helping out as soon as possible.

* E-Bike Post*

Summer is fully underway, and the amount of phone calls, texts, Facebook mentions, etc., about the newly popular e bikes are rising daily.

Parents, if your child has an E bike please talk to them about the importance of driving safe, wearing helmets, and following traffic laws.

We promise you, no APD officer wants to spend their day chasing around kids having a good time on their bikes. With that being said, the last thing we would ever want to do is have to knock on your door to notify you that your child has been in a crash and is hurt.

Pinned below are a few images with some safety tips and bike laws. It’s going to take more than a few police officers patrolling to ensure the safety of riders and motorists alike. So once again, please make sure your kids are practicing bike safety. We want everyone to have a great and safe summer.

Planned Power Outage

Amherst Utilities Department will be performing scheduled maintenance overnight tonight, June 4, 2026, beginning at 3:30 a.m. This work will require a planned power outage for Amherst Utility customers located south of State Route 2.

The outage is expected to last approximately one hour; however, the duration may vary. Power will be restored as soon as the maintenance is completed.
