The American Red Cross of Alaska would like to extend out heartfelt gratitude to De Hennes, a Jesuit Volunteer and preparedness coordinator in Southeast Alaska who completed her term with the Red Cross this summer. De focused on preparedness, teaching both children and adults how to prepare for emergencies before disasters occur. “I really enjoy going into classrooms and showing students how Pedro the Penguin, our teaching aid, prepares. Right now, we’re also piloting Ouch Pouch mini Be Red Cross
Ready presentations, where kids build their own basic first aid kits.”

One of De’s favorite Red Cross experiences was a deployment to Bethel to assist during the recent northwest storms where she found many moments of connection and calm with fellow volunteers amidst the storm. “Red Cross volunteers are like an intentional community. There’s a lot of kindness, respect, compassion and care shown to one another and the communities we serve. That means a lot to me.”

"Tok is a small community, and everyone here is sort of brought together by the desire to 'get away' from others and live remotely and away from the world," said Nantia Krisitnu, Red Cross of Alaska Volunteer Caseworker. Just 83 miles from the Canadian border, Tok is home to roughly 1,200 people and was recently devastated by the Mukluk fire.

Nantia began volunteering with the Red Cross about a year ago and was deployed to Tok as an intake worker, helping those impacted by the fire receive immediate assistance. "There are a lot of heartfelt conversations with a lot of people," said Nantia. "Their true colors really shine through, and it is so beautiful to see people working together and supporting each other."

Since the fire started, Red Cross volunteers have helped 29 families begin their road to recovery. We rely on trained volunteers to help when a disaster strikes. "The wonderful thing about the Red Cross is that we help everyone who qualifies, and I wouldn't have it any other way," said Nantia.

Blake was asleep when his mother called his phone to wake him up. "She said she saw smoke a few miles away and called me to help move some of our vehicles and snow machines," said Blake. It was a mere 20 minutes later, when the family was working together to move their belongings, that the flames from the Mukluk Wildfire in Tok crested their neighbor's property. The images show the large smoke plume they saw as they evacuated and what remains of his home after the wildfire. Blake said Tok is his family's home and he hopes to rebuild as soon as possible. "With the money from the Red Cross, that will buy us screws, wood, and some tools to rebuild." Immediate assistance is still available from the Red Cross. Today, our volunteer caseworkers provided immediate assistance and disaster supplies to families affected by the Mukluk fire. We will have additional availability for casework on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings from 5 to 8 pm at the Tok School and Wednesday from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm at the Tok Visitor Center. The Red Cross of AK began distributing emergency supplies to those impacted by the Mukluk fire in Tok today. Volunteers will be handing out shovels, rakes, cleanup kits, gloves, masks, trash bags, and more to those in need outside the Disaster Assistance Center located at the Tok Visitors Center. The volunteers will have supplies on Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Our shelter at the Tok School remains open and available to anyone in the area evacuating due to the Mukluk fire. More disaster responders and supplies are now heading to the interior to support this growing response.

A wildfire can spread very quickly, leaving you little time to get to safety. Be prepared to evacuate at a
moment’s notice. If you feel you are in danger, leave immediately. You might not get an official notice to evacuate. If you have a car, ensure the gas tank is full and park it facing the direction of your evacuation route. Keep your pets in one room so you can find them if you need to evacuate quickly. Monitor local weather and fires near you. Sign up for free emergency alerts from your local government.
