The good news: A January count suggests that the number of people in our community who have no safe place to sleep is dropping. More shelter space has opened, and more people are taking advantage of it.

The reality: Hundreds of people remain unsheltered: Sleeping outdoors, in tents, in doorways, in vehicles and in places not fit for anyone to live.

The crunch: Shelters are full, but that doesn’t mean more shelter is the answer. We need housing for those with very low incomes. Because housing IS the answer.

Thanks to the Anchorage Daily News for putting a spotlight on the situation. Read the story: https://www.adn.com/alaska-news/anchorage/2026/05/21/fewer-people-are-experiencing-homelessness-in-anchorage-as-providers-say-shelter-capacity-is-insufficient/

Stacy, a german shepherd-husky mix, helped me overcome my long-time fear of dogs.

‘I have long been skeptical of furry creatures. When I was a young boy, a pug mauled two of my toes. So I hesitated when I encountered that dog in the gym. But some innate, unresolved part of me pulled closer. Approaching, I looked for its handler,” writes Angelo.
