Job Location: Elk Neck State Park in Cecil County, MD

The Park Maintenance Program Supervisor is responsible for the supervision and maintenance of grounds, facilities, and equipment within Elk Neck State Park, provide assistance on new facilities, and perform maintenance work. They directly or indirectly supervise permanent staff, seasonal staff, volunteers, and others.

Have you ever raced in a kayak? What about over 35 miles while switching people in and out of your boat?

In July, hundreds of people joined the BayPaddle to see just that! From newer paddlers to seasoned water sport enthusiasts and professionals, Kent Island was buzzing with energy around the only OC6 change race on the East Coast. This unique long-distance race features outrigger canoes that carry six people, and that change out their rowmates during the race. As paddlers become exhausted, they exit the boat and are replaced by newer paddlers who join from the water - all while the boat remains in motion.

Kayak clubs and recreational paddlers also hit the water! From experienced professionals to more novice paddlers, the event gave everyone a chance to take in the beauty of the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries from the water. It was a great morning on the water for everyone to enjoy the water, build community, and work together to navigate the winds, tides, and currents of the bay- all while raising money to support restoration of the Chesapeake Bay. This year we are offering a new, special edition hard card for fishing, hunting, and boating licenses that honors the state’s wildlife and outdoor history. The artwork on the card is a relic of Maryland’s past. It served as the frontispiece for Maryland Conservationist magazine, published by a predecessor agency of DNR, between 1924 and 1947. What do mussels and submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV) have in common? They both help keep our water clear.

Mussels act as natural filters, pulling particles, algae, and excess nutrients out of the water as they feed. At the same time, SAV stabilizes sediments on the bottom and reduces resuspension caused by waves and boat traffic. Together, they create clearer water that allows more sunlight to reach underwater plants, which in turn supports a healthier, more resilient ecosystem.

Clearer water benefits everything from underwater grasses and oysters to fish, crabs, and waterfowl. It’s a powerful reminder to protect habitat-forming species like mussels and SAV since they support the entire Chesapeake Bay food web.

What are those new signs popping up on state land trails?

A new participatory science project across Maryland is hoping that YOU join the effort to track changing conditions on the trails and public lands we use and love! Track Your Trails (TYT) photo station signs encourage recreationists to take a couple of minutes and add their valuable trailside observations (and site photo) to the growing project database. Each photo station gathers site specific information and this information will help monitor changes to these special places. Observations will help monitor trail conditions, flora and fauna, and climatic impacts over time. You’re invited to contribute data every time you pass a TYT sign!

The data is free and publicly available via the data visualization platform, Fieldscope. It will help land managers make informed decisions, can be an excellent real-world resource for educators, and is available for the public to explore.

Where can you join the effort? Photo stations are live at Assateague and Rocky Gap State Park, with Cedarville State Forest and Janes Island, Rosaryville, and Swallow Falls State Parks going live by mid-August. Many more locations will be going live in early Autumn, so be sure to keep checking https://trackyourtrails.fieldscope.org/ to see where you can make a difference next!
