Athens Jaycees

Athens Jaycees The Athens Jaycees is organization of young professionals dedicated to serving the Greater Athens, Georgia Community. “We Believe . . .

That faith in God gives meaning and purpose to human life;
That the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations;
That economic justice can best be won by free men through free enterprise;
That government should be of laws rather than of men;
That earth’s great treasure lies in human personality;
And that service to humanity is the best work of life!”

Our latest speaker was our very own David Wildes! David joined the Jaycees in November 2024 and currently serves as the Services Chair on the Jaycees Board of Directors. He joined the Jaycees precisely because it was an organization dedicated to personal and professional development through service to the community. He also serves on the Board of the Friends of the Library organization affiliated with the Athens Clarke County Public Library as the co-chair for the biannual Book Sale fundraising events. In his day job, David is the Senior Program Coordinator for International Business at the UGA Terry College of Business where he manages the IB co-major academic program and international internships. By night, he is a graduate student in the UGA Master of Public Administration Program. David has done an incredible job as our Services Chair and we look forward to a great year of service projects!

Located at First Baptist Church off Pulaski Street here in Athens, Our Daily Bread serves over 500 men and woman each week for breakfast and lunch while also providing access to hygiene kits, health screening, job training resources, and more.

This past week our guest speaker was our very own Dr. Alex Duggan! Dr. Duggan is a practicing physician at St Mary’s and gave a fascinating talk about testosterone and its impact to men’s health. A belated post for our Martin Luther King day of service. This year we were able to work with Friends of Brooklyn Cemetery to assist in cleaning and restoring their grounds. Established in 1882, the Brooklyn Cemetery was one of the first African American cemeteries in Athens, GA. Residing on the western side of Athens, It served as the final resting place for many residents of the Brooklyn/Hawthorne area. We are proud to be able to assist in preserving the rich history of Athens!

If you would like to donate to Friends of Brooklyn Cemetery or learn more about their organization, you can visit their website at http://www.brooklyncemetery.org.

We are heartbroken to share the news of the passing of our dear friend and mentor, Chad Thomason. Chad was not only a pillar of the Athens community but also made a lasting impact throughout the state of Georgia.

His leadership was instrumental in the reemergence of the Athens Jaycees, bringing us together and inspiring us to carry forward his vision. Many of us are part of this group today because of Chad’s dedication and belief in its purpose. He truly embodied the values of our creed in every aspect of his life.

Chad was more than a leader—he was a mentor and a true friend to so many of us. He guided with wisdom, gave generously, and brought joy and laughter wherever he went. His influence and spirit will be deeply missed but never forgotten.

We remain committed to supporting his family and friends with our prayers, love, and strength. As Athens Jaycees, we will honor his legacy by continuing the work he was so passionate about and striving to live with the same purpose and heart that he showed us all.

Share Memories and Support the Family.
