No agent charged. No findings made public. It's been over a week since Lorenzo Salgado Araujo was killed by ICE agents in Houston, and his family is still waiting for answers.

"As an organization committed to accountable government, transparency, and the rule of law, the League of Women Voters believes the public has a right to a thorough, independent, and transparent investigation whenever a life is lost during a government law enforcement operation," said Tae Mi Lee, President of the League of Women Voters of Texas. How will data centers affect water availability in your community?

TEXAS STATE WATER PLAN REVEALS FUNDING SHORTFALL AND INADEQUATE INFORMATION ABOUT DATA CENTER IMPACT!

In Austin, several interim hearings were recently held in multiple committees on water-related issues, including a House Natural Resources Committee hearing on June 23rd, atwhich the draft 2027 Texas Water Plan was presented by the Texas Water Development (TWDB). Unfortunately, even with the passage of Prop 4 last November, appropriations for water infrastructure still fall well short of the $174 Billion price tag that the plan estimates will be needed through 2080 to meet Texas’ water needs. Interim testimony further revealed that the legislature does not have adequate information to estimate the water demand from data centers since, of 341 data centers surveyed by TWDB in 2025, only 17% responded.

🎆 Happy 250th Birthday, America! 🎆

250 years ago, a group of people made a bold bet: that ordinary citizens could govern themselves. That bet still has to be renewed every single day, by people like you.

The answer isn't complacency. It's participation. It's institutions that stay transparent. It's citizens who stay informed. It's organizations willing to do the unglamorous work of voter registration, election protection, and civic education, year after year, regardless of who's in power.

That's been LWVTX's mission for over a century: empowering voters, defending democracy. A mission that is nonpartisan, unwavering, and rooted in the belief that self-government only works when everyone has real access to it. Not some of us. Everyone.

The challenges facing our democratic institutions today are real. So is the capacity of everyday people to meet them. We've seen it before, and we're seeing it now, in the volunteers who staff polling place hotlines, the interns who help us reach new voters, and the community members who never stop asking hard questions of their leaders.

So today, as you celebrate with your family, your grill, and your fireworks, take a moment to remember that democracy isn't a spectator sport. It's not something that happens to us. It's something we build together, on purpose.
