“My sister, Carissa, was born with a serious heart problem (TGA) and had open-heart surgery at just 3 months old. She did well throughout childhood, but by age 15, her heart had begun to weaken. At 18, she had a pacemaker and defibrillator implanted and was placed on the transplant waiting list.

On Oct. 14, 2001, Carissa received her new heart. Because of the selfless gift of an organ donor, we were given 15 more years with her. Sadly, Carissa passed away suddenly in January 2017.

My family and I will forever be grateful for her donor and the donor’s family for honoring their loved one’s wishes and giving us those precious extra years with Carissa.”

Thank you to everyone who joined us for our screening of ABUNDANT at Cinemark Baldwin Hills. The evening brought together community members, faith leaders, and supporters for a powerful conversation about altruism, kidney donation, and the impact of giving.

"My husband got eight years and eight months more of life because of a donated heart. It wasn’t an easy journey — transplants almost never are — but we were able to live and travel, watch our grandkids grow up, and see one return home from war. We celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary. Bless everyone who donates."

Art with a purpose. Four dedicated OneLegacy Ambassadors recently came together at Long Beach City College to transform and hand paint a utility box into a powerful public art installation that promotes organ, eye, and tissue donation.

The project is especially meaningful because each ambassador has a personal connection to the cause. Two are donor mothers whose children gave the gift of life through organ, eye, and tissue donation, while two are transplant recipients whose lives were saved thanks to the generosity of donors and their families.

Through creativity, collaboration, and storytelling, these ambassadors turned a shared mission into a lasting reminder of the impact donation can have on individuals, families, and entire communities. Their artwork serves as an inspiring call to action, encouraging others to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors and help save and heal lives.

Every registration has the potential to make a lifesaving difference.

"My brother became an organ and tissue donor. It was ironic when I got the call that he was a donor, but it didn't really surprise me. Greg never talked to me about registering, but he had a quiet, gentle personality.

He had the kindest heart and always wanted to do right by everyone. Knowing his donation helped more than 50 people around the world gives me peace. Even in death, he was still thinking of others.

Some days are harder than others, but I find comfort in knowing he is still helping people through the gift of donation."

More than 50 family members and friends gathered at OneLegacy’s Transplant Recovery Center in Azusa to honor the life of Brandon Gonzalez, an 18-year-old Marine recruit who had a dream of serving his country. Brandon’s life was cut tragically short after he was struck by a vehicle while walking home crossing the street last week.

After suffering traumatic head injuries and being attended by medical staff at Antelope Valley Medical Center, who did everything possible to save Brandon’s life, Brandon’s injuries were too severe, and he was not able to recover from his injuries. Even through their grief, Brandon’s parents made the selfless decision to say "yes" to organ and tissue donation, honoring Brandon’s commitment to serving others to live on.

Members of the Marines honored Brandon’s memory by presenting his family with a special U.S. flag, which was flown at the Capitol in D.C. and brought to Los Angeles by Congressman George Whiteside. Brandon’s legacy is no longer defined by the tragedy of his death, but by the lives he will help save. Brandon will save up to eight lives with his organs and heal more than 75 lives with his tissues.

"My daughter just had her third heart transplant. She received her first transplant at 5 months old after being born with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS), a rare congenital heart defect in which the left side of the heart is underdeveloped. Her second transplant came at age 9 because of rejection and coronary artery disease (CAD), which affects the blood vessels that supply the heart. At 22, she received her third transplant because of cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV), a form of chronic rejection that causes narrowing of the blood vessels in a transplanted heart.

"John was full of life, smart and funny. He had a huge heart and was there for anyone who needed him. That is why it wasn't a surprise to learn he had registered to be an organ donor.
