"Our son Kyle passed away 10 years ago. He had signed up at the DMV to be an organ donor. He was 20 years old. We're so proud of Kyle for doing that, even though some family members were not happy with our decision. But it does help the forever grieving to know that others lived, breathed and thrived because of Kyle.

I'd also really like to thank OneLegacy for the two years of grief counseling we received. The counseling we received now helps us support others in their grief."

We are incredibly proud to highlight this Op-Ed written by OneLegacy Ambassador and UCI Health nurse Marie Brandon about her son, Jacob.

Service oriented in life and after his passing, Jacob healed 132 people and inspires a nation to say yes to donation this Memorial Day.

I wasn’t surprised to learn Jacob was a registered organ donor. He was the first to offer help to anyone.

"This is my daughter, Kristen. She tragically died at 13 years old. Just months earlier, Kristen wouldn’t let me leave the DMV until I checked the donor box on my driver’s license renewal. 🪪

In the weeks before the new year, Kristen also worked on One Legacy Donate Life 🌹 floats. She loved everything about art, and the years she helped decorate floats were some of her favorite moments in life. I even have photos of her working on the Donate Life float.

So when Kristen died, I knew from our conversations that I wouldn’t need to be asked about organ and tissue donation. I already knew what she would have wanted. I didn’t want another family to experience the same loss, and I know Kristen would be happy knowing she saved a life.

I hope this child lives a very long life because it is the ultimate gift a stranger can give."

"My daughter, Mary Pope, was a mother, daughter, sister and friend.

Mary had a zest for life, a laugh that could lift your spirits, and a smile that could light up a room. She was loyal, loving and deeply cared for by everyone blessed enough to know her. Family was everything to Mary, and her heart will forever live on in her two boys, Travis and River Pope. They were only 6 and 1 year old when they lost the most important person in their lives.

Mary tragically passed away from a choking accident at just 31 years old. Through organ donation, she was able to donate her liver, both kidneys and pancreas, helping three separate families. Even more people were helped through tissue donation, including a woman who had lived with pain for 30 years due to spinal degenerative disc disease until receiving a spinal graft with Mary’s tissue. She later wrote that it 'literally changed her life.'

Mary was born, raised and lived in Lakewood, California. She loved weekend trips with family, sporting events, concerts, wine nights, watching her oldest son play sports, and she even coached his soccer team. Her family and lifelong friends will always carry a piece of her with them.

Our family participates in the Donate Life Run Walk every year and plans to continue for years to come. In addition to raising awareness about organ donation, we want Travis and River to grow up knowing their mother was a hero."

“Losing my daughter, Maritza, eight months ago broke me, but knowing she lives on in others gives me something to hold onto. She was only 20 years old. I hope that one day I can meet the people she saved.”

“This can’t be the end of the story.”

After a freak accident, 11 year old Christopher was rushed to the hospital. Despite every effort to save him, his mother realized the medication wasn't working and knew he was gone. She initiated the conversation about organ donation, feeling that his life had to mean something more.

Christopher became a superhero, saving lives and giving other families an extra chance at life.

"Whenever they tell me the story again, I always get emotional or sad. And then I feel for the family that gave me the heart. And I am so thankful that I have the heart."

Receiving her gift of life as a baby, Maline is now a thriving 12-year-old enjoying 7th grade, e-bike rides, and Starbucks.
