Island Volunteer Caregivers

Island Volunteer Caregivers IVC: Helping Hands Open Hearts In our own community, there are people who fall through the cracks and whose needs are not being met by existing programs.

IVC is a non-profit organization on Bainbridge Island that promotes the health, well-being, dignity and independence of the elderly, disabled and those in need by providing one-on-one relationships with trusted volunteers in our community. IVC volunteers are committed to making life a little easier and more comfortable for our neighbors-in-need so they can live their best lives. Likewise, there ar

e people who believe that service to others is an enriching and essential component of a meaningful life. IVC helps fill in some of these gaps by connecting neighbor to neighbor, and helping our care receivers continue to lead independent lives.

Bainbridge — we need your help supporting our neighbors.

We're looking for volunteer drivers.

Island Volunteer Caregivers (IVC) has been connecting older adults and neighbors in need with volunteers for over 30 years. Right now, our greatest need is transportation - people who can give a few hours a week or even a month to take a neighbor to a doctor's appointment, the pharmacy, or a treatment they can't get to on their own.

27% of Bainbridge Island residents are 65 or older, and many live alone or without nearby support. Our island is aging. Demand for our services is growing, and we need to recruit more volunteers to meet that need.

We're not asking for a big commitment. The biggest perk of volunteering with IVC is flexibility - IVC fits into your life, not the other way around. You set your own schedule, drive your own car, and give a neighbor the support they need to stay independent.

Two hours can make someone's entire day - because for many of our care receivers, a ride to the grocery store or medical appointment isn't a convenience. It's a lifeline.

If you've ever wanted to help a neighbor and just didn't know how - this is how. IVC supports neighbors who are aging, living with a disability, or facing adversity. We believe no one should have to face life's challenges alone.

A big thank you to IVC volunteer Christopher von Koschembahr for driving IVC care receiver Jerry — known around the island as “Majick the Clown,” aka the “Balloon Man” — and his daughter Izzy in the Fourth of July parade! Jerry paid tribute to Evelyn Peratrovich, former president of the Visually Impaired Persons (VIP) group and a cherished IVC care recipient.

Special thanks to our IVC and Senior Center volunteers who helped decorate the truck and make it all happen. What a wonderful celebration of community! 🇺🇸❤️💙🤍

For over 25 years, community members have brought flowers from their own gardens to Eagle Harbor Church, where IVC volunteers assemble them into bouquets and deliver them to IVC care receivers, residents at Island Health and Rehab, and neighbors going through a difficult time. In 2025, the Flowers from the Heart team delivered around 100 bouquets a week between July and August. 💐

Flowers from the Heart is a program built on a simple idea: a gift of joy and kindness in the form of fresh flowers.

IVC is inviting the community to donate flowers and foliage through the end of July.

🩵How to Donate🩵
Drop off garden flowers and foliage Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday mornings at Eagle Harbor Church. Buckets will be set out in front of the church for donations. Donors who bring their own bucket should label it with their name and phone number so it can be returned.

Have someone in mind who might need a little extra joy from a bouquet of flowers? Contact IVC at (206) 842 4441.

Join us for a Memory Cafe at Bloedel Reserve!

On Friday, July 10th from 10:00–11:30 AM, we're hosting our third Memory Cafe. This is a free, welcoming gathering for people living with memory loss and their care partners. This month features a special morning of live music with Carl Westphal and Paul Connor. Music has a remarkable way of bringing us back to ourselves and to each other, and we can't wait to share that experience together. Coffee, tea, and light snacks will be served.

All conditions and stages are welcome. Each registration covers one participant and one care partner (spouse, child, friend, or professional caregiver). This is not a drop-off event.

The cafe is held in the Residence living room at Bloedel Reserve. A van will meet attendees in the North Parking Lot — no need to drive to the Residence directly. Full logistics will be shared upon registration.

Space is limited, so please register in advance by contacting Tara Wittrup Moyer at [email protected] or 206-842-7631, ext. 28.

💙✨What a night. ✨💙

Last Thursday on June 4th, our community came together at the beautiful Kiana Lodge to celebrate 30 years of IVC — 30 years of neighbors showing up for neighbors, of care given and received, and of a community that continues to grow stronger together.

To every guest who joined us, every founder who built what we get to carry forward, every speaker who shared their heart, and every person behind the scenes who brought it all to life — thank you.

A special thank you to the generous spirits who bid on our auction items, dashed for dessert, tried their luck in the raffle, and answered the paddle call. We also raised a glass thanks to a beautiful wine donation from Eagle Harbor Winery. Your generosity is what makes nights like this possible.

And to our sponsors, whose support means the world to us at IVC:

🥇 Platinum: Town & Country

🥈 Gold: Merrill Lynch · · · Heyday Fund · Hudson Construction

The 2026 Gather & Give Gala was more than a fundraiser. It was a reunion, a celebration, and a reminder of why this work matters so deeply.

We are so grateful to call this community ours. See you next year! 💙✨

On Friday, April 17th, IVC hosted our annual Volunteer Appreciation event at BIMA - and what a night it was! 🩵🫶🏻

Volunteers, staff, and board members came together to celebrate the incredible work our volunteers do for our care receivers. Our Volunteer Manager Jackie shared a wonderful presentation on the history of IVC and how our programs have grown organically over the years. This is all thanks to our volunteers, who serve as our eyes and ears in the community, spotting gaps and opportunities where IVC can step in to strengthen support for our neighbors.

And the food? Catered by T&C - absolutely delicious! 🫶🏻

To our volunteers: thank you for showing up, again and again, for your neighbors. We couldn’t do this without you. 🩵🫶🏻
