Regarding the override for Bellingham, please understand why it is needed:

The reasons for this deficit for the schools is not because of the mismanagement of funds. It has to do with less funding from the state, increased health care costs, increased transportation rates, and increased special needs costs. You can see all the slides from the meeting at the town website.

If the override passes, the increase to property taxes will be $299 a YEAR based on an average house of $400,000 value. That’s $25 a month or .82 cents a day. I understand that people are on fixed budgets, but that does not seem like an unreasonable ask considering what the return on investment would be (the betterment of our next generation). Besides 37 teachers being let go and that severely effecting the children’s education, and no sports will also be detrimental since these kids rely on them as an outlet to regulate their mental health. I believe that voting no will be very detrimental to our town as a whole.

Parents of youth with disabilities are often incorrectly told that the only way to remain involved in their child’s adult life is to go to court and become a legal guardian. But that is not true. There are other options—including Supported Decision-Making—that may work better for a person with a disability and their family.

Every student is preparing for life after high school.
For students on IEPs, that path requires intentional planning and targeted skill-building.

I’m looking forward to speaking with the Newton SEPAC at a free virtual event for community members focused on what transition planning really means, how family and student rights fit into the process, and practical ways to build independence and self-determination skills that support adult success.

In this session, we’ll cover:
• What effective transition planning should include for students on IEPs
• Why skill-building is just as important as academic readiness
• Everyday ways families can support transition planning at home

📅 Thursday, Feb 12 at 6:30 PM
💻 Free virtual event for Massachusetts families, educators, and community members
