If you got up this morning and brushed your teeth, made coffee, or poured yourself a big glass of water then you have public health to thank! 💦

Public health authorities got involved with water supplies during the Progressive Era in United States history when governments and ordinary individuals were making great leaps to clean up, secure, and generally organize our lives. Industrialization and increasing populations in towns and cities made it easier for disease to spread from person to person and from our environment. But at the same time, scientific progress let us figure out that most of these diseases were caused by specific agents like viruses and bacteria. Once we identified what made us sick, we could learn how to stop it! 🦠

Filters, treatment, and disinfectant introduced in the 1890s and 1900s lay the groundwork for our modern water systems. Cities and states passed their own laws about drinking water testing throughout the early 20th century and in 1974, the Safe Drinking Water Act was passed to regulate water quality nationwide. Today, Broome County Health Department reviews plans for all new public drinking water systems, monitors reports from our public water systems, and conducts our own testing to make sure our water is safe from source to tap!

Last week, Environmental Health staff visited Camp Amahami to conduct a children's camp pre-operational inspection. 🏕️

Our Public Health Sanitarians inspect children's camps each year to help ensure they meet New York State health and safety requirements. During these inspections, staff review items such as sanitation, bathing facilities, food service operations, emergency procedures, and overall camp safety to help provide a safe and healthy environment for campers and staff.

Our Overdose Prevention team had a great time talking with people in Johnson City last night about how to save lives with tips on medication safety and more.

National Night Out in Johnson City was so much fun! Several people were trained in naloxone, educated on medication safety, given hygiene items, and other valuable resources! While Michelle talked to parents, children were able to enjoy hopscotch on such a beautiful evening!
