Today, the Broome County District Attorney's Office took members of our Youth Diversion Program on a tour of SUNY Broome Community College because showing young people what is possible is just a part of the work we do.

From technical programs to career pathways, today was about opening doors and planting seeds. These are the moments that matter.

Thank you SUNY Broome for having us!

Cocchiola in Broome County Court.

Affholder pleaded guilty to the following charges:
โ€ข Assault in the Second Degree: Recklessly Causing Serious Physical Injury with a Weapon or Instrument (Count One)
โ€ข Assault in the Second Degree: Recklessly Causing Serious Physical Injury with a Weapon or Instrument (Count Two)
โ€ข Assault in the Second Degree: Recklessly Causing Serious Physical Injury with a Weapon or Instrument (Count Three)
โ€ข Assault in the Third Degree: Recklessly Causing Physical Injury (Count Four)
โ€ข Assault in the Third Degree: Recklessly Causing Physical Injury (Count Five)
โ€ข Operating a Motor Vehicle While Impaired by Drugs: First Offense

The sentences were imposed on June 8, 2026, by the Honorable Judge Carol A. Cocchiola in Broome County Court. Affholder was sentenced to 5 years in State Prison followed by 5 years of Post-Release Supervision on each of the three Assault in the Second-Degree charges. Affholder was additionally sentenced to 1 year of local imprisonment on each of the remaining charges, all to be served concurrently. Additionally, Affholderโ€™s privileges to operate a motor vehicle in New York will be revoked.

On the evening of October 31, 2025, Affholder operated a motor vehicle while impaired by methamphetamines and struck a group of families trick-or-treating in a residential community. Multiple individuals were injured as a result of the accident, including a minor.

During sentencing, Hon. Judge Cocchiola addressed Affholder directly as: "A selfish person driving under the influence of methamphetamines."

"The victims in this case showed tremendous courage by coming forward and sharing their victim impact statements. Their strength throughout this process is a testament to their resilience, and it is my hope that today's sentence brings them a measure of peace and closure. I also want to recognize the citizens who stepped in to help those injured on the scene before emergency services arrived, their swift action made a difference. Driving under the influence of drugs is not a mistake, it is a choice, and it is one that carries devastating consequences for innocent people and families. The Broome County District Attorney's Office will always stand with victims and pursue the accountability they deserve. ๐’๐š๐ข๐ ๐ƒ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐ข๐œ๐ญ ๐€๐ญ๐ญ๐จ๐ซ๐ง๐ž๐ฒ ๐…. ๐๐š๐ฎ๐ฅ ๐๐š๐ญ๐ญ๐ข๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข.

Broome County District Attorney F. Paul Battisti announced today that Craig T. Shoemaker, 37, of Vestal, was convicted on June 3, 2026, before the Honorable Judge Carol A. Cocchiola in Broome County Court on all three counts following a jury trial:

โ€ข Promoting Prison Contraband in the First Degree
โ€ข Promoting Prison Contraband in the Second Degree (Count Two)
โ€ข Promoting Prison Contraband in the Second Degree (Count Three)

The charges stem from an incident in September 2025, in which Shoemaker, while confined to the Broome County Correctional Facility in the Town of Dickinson, was found to be in unlawful possession of a lighter which constitutes dangerous contraband as well as quantities of to***co.

โ€œCorrectional facilities cannot operate safely when individuals attempt to introduce prohibited items into these secure environments. Todayโ€™s guilty verdict sends a clear message that conduct that undermines the safety and order of our jails and will be met with serious consequences. I thank the jury for their service and the law enforcement professionals whose dedication ensured that justice was served.

Today, the Broome County District Attorney's Office was proud to attend the Crime Victims Assistance Center, Inc.'s Memorial Wall Ceremony at Roundtop Park.

What began as an Eagle Scouts project by Schyler Savage, inspired by the loss of his own mother, has grown into something truly meaningful for our entire community.

This wall exists to honor those we have lost to crime and to give their families and loved ones a place of peace and remembrance.

That mission is one our office holds close to everything we do.

To every victim and every family represented on that wall, you are not forgotten.
