Community Kitchen

Community Kitchen Community Kitchen serves anyone in need. We serve meals to anyone in need six days a week from two locations.

Community Kitchen of Monroe County's mission is to work, alone and in collaboration with others, to eliminate hunger in Monroe County and surrounding areas, through direct service, education and advocacy. We also have programs targeting at-risk children and youth, taking meals and healthy snacks to them where they are.

Happy Friday! This is the first full week of our Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and we have had a successful transition to our summer schedule. Seasonal staff & volunteers have rocked the morning shifts, getting lunches ready for the kiddos.

Another highlight of the week was when the students from St. Thomas Lutheran Church VBS filled one of the meal prep shifts. They and their adult counselors did a great job and completed all the tasks we gave them. It is always wonderful to see youth volunteering at Community Kitchen and we are grateful to Pastor Beck for facilitating this effort.

And on a final note, I want to extend a huge thank you to the volunteers who step up and do extra shifts when we are short-handed. May is a transitional month with IU students leaving while year-round residents are still getting their summer plans set. While we face some challenging days, we always make it work!

If you are interested in volunteering, please call me at 812-332-0999 or email me at [email protected]. You can do a one-time volunteer shift to help out in a pinch, or you can have a regular gig so you don't miss out on any of the good times!

It's summer and we're providing free lunches to children under 18, in these neighborhoods at these times each Monday-Friday until school resumes in August. Children must be present to receive a meal but any child can access food at any of these stops. You don't have to live in the neighborhood where we're serving. No requirements and one meal per person.

Today is the first day of our Summer Food Service Program! We went to 10 neighborhoods, distributing lunches to kids. We know that summer can be tough for families as they try to absorb the additional groceries needed when the kids are home all day. This program is designed to give families a little relief by providing lunch for the kids. We will continue throughout the summer until August 4th, the day before school starts.

If you want to help with this program, please contact me about volunteering. The shift is from 10:00-1:30 and one volunteer goes on each route, along with a staff member who is driving. You will hand out lunches and help staff keep track of the number served. You can schedule a weekly shift, or schedule less often if that works better for you.

Shoot me an email at [email protected] or call me at 812-332-0999 to get signed up.

We are thrilled to share an exciting new collaboration between Community Kitchen of Monroe County and the City of Bloomington Parks and Recreation Community Gardens for this growing season to make it easier than ever for local gardeners to donate fresh, homegrown produce.

To ensure that the bounty of our local gardeners and their gardens reaches neighbors who need it most, we are working to establish weekly produce donation pickups at each of the city’s three garden sites this growing season:
📍 Willie Streeter Community Garden
📍 Butler Park Community Garden
📍 Switchyard Park Community Garden

Whether you have a surplus of summer squash, an abundance of tomatoes, or you're intentionally planting an extra row for the community, your harvest will go directly onto the plates of our patrons!

Even if you don't have a plot at a city garden, you can still help feed our community! We invite all local backyard gardeners, urban farmers, and community members to share their extra harvests with us!

Community Kitchen Drop-off Hours:
Monday – Friday: 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.
Saturday: 11:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Together, we can reduce food waste and support food security right here in Monroe County.
Thank you for growing with us!

In the 28 years Community Kitchen has been providing summer meals to children, we have served 386,531 meals to children in low-income neighborhoods when they're away from schools meals for the summer!

We appreciate the way other agencies start niche programs to help meet the needs of families. While new things sometimes get the limelight, we just want to remind you that we're still here, still providing healthy weekday lunches all summer, from the 1st day out of school through the last day before they go back. Lunches include proteins, grains, fresh fruits and vegetables, and milk. One of our routes serves sack lunches while the other (food truck) route serves a warm lunch meal.

Since Thursday is the last day of school, our service starts on Friday at the following times and locations. We're currently signing up volunteers for our lunch prep shift, 730-930am, and our delivery shift 10am-1pm. You can sign up by calling June at 812-332-0999.
