The Carroll Street Bridge will reopen soon, and I encourage DOT to open it for pedestrians and cyclists only!

Reopening this historic landmark is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reimagine how we share public space in Gowanus. As our neighborhood grows, we should prioritize safe, accessible infrastructure that serves pedestrians and cyclists, reduces traffic violence, and strengthens community connection.

I was grateful to spend the day as an honorary nurse at Maimonides for their 20th annual Nurse for a Day program! I had the opportunity to shadow the incredible nurses who show up for our community every single day with compassion, skill, and care.

I spent time on the mother and baby floor, where I learned more about the care nurses provide to both mothers and newborns, as well as broader trends and concerns around childbirth. It was no surprise to hear that birth rates have declined significantly, and that New York City’s affordability crisis and limited parental leave are major factors weighing on families.

I also toured Maimonides’ brand-new Pediatric ER, which opened last fall and is the only freestanding Pediatric ER and Pediatric Trauma Center in Brooklyn. Nurses and staff shared that they are seeing increasing numbers of children experiencing psychiatric and mental health conditions, underscoring the urgent need for expanded mental health services, universal childcare, affordable housing, and paid leave. Expanding and investing in these supports remains one of my top priorities as a Council Member.

I was born at Maimonides, and Maimonides nurses have cared for me, my family, and my community my entire life. Thank you to and to nurses across New York City for all that you do.

Gas is still out in far too many NYCHA tenants’ apartments, and I am continuing to press NYCHA for answers and accountability. At last month’s public housing hearing, I made clear that comprehensive modernization efforts must include electrical upgrades and a transition to electric stoves. In the short term, I will keep pushing for these gas outages to be resolved as quickly as possible, and in the long term, for the substantial infrastructure investments our public housing residents deserve.

AAPI Heritage Month may be over, but the work of building representation, equity, and opportunity for Asian New Yorkers continues!

I’m proud to have co-authored this piece with Jimmy Pan, Exec Director of NYC’s Equal Employment Practices Commission, on why more Asian New Yorkers should consider careers in public service. Our city is strongest when the people shaping policy and delivering services reflect the communities they serve—and there’s still so much work to do to ensure Asian New Yorkers are represented at every level of government.

If you’ve ever thought about serving your community, there’s no better time to step up. Read our City & State op-ed:

Last week I was honored to celebrate Guyanese Independence Day at City Hall! I was especially proud to present a proclamation to the amazing .sarikapersaud, an esteemed psychologist whose work strengthens New York City every single day. She is not only a compassionate leader in the field of mental health, but also an important inspiration for South Asian and Indo-Caribbean women across our city and beyond. Congrats to all honorees: Jennifer Bisram, Bharati Sukul Kemraj, and Dr. Stephen S. Carryl!
