I was grateful to spend the day as an honorary nurse at Maimonides for their 20th annual Nurse for a Day program! I had the opportunity to shadow the incredible nurses who show up for our community every single day with compassion, skill, and care.
I spent time on the mother and baby floor, where I learned more about the care nurses provide to both mothers and newborns, as well as broader trends and concerns around childbirth. It was no surprise to hear that birth rates have declined significantly, and that New York City’s affordability crisis and limited parental leave are major factors weighing on families.
I also toured Maimonides’ brand-new Pediatric ER, which opened last fall and is the only freestanding Pediatric ER and Pediatric Trauma Center in Brooklyn. Nurses and staff shared that they are seeing increasing numbers of children experiencing psychiatric and mental health conditions, underscoring the urgent need for expanded mental health services, universal childcare, affordable housing, and paid leave. Expanding and investing in these supports remains one of my top priorities as a Council Member.
I was born at Maimonides, and Maimonides nurses have cared for me, my family, and my community my entire life. Thank you to and to nurses across New York City for all that you do.
