Here’s the plan: I propose we do a community-led rezoning of the area known as “the triangle.” Because if we want our vote back, we’re going to have to build. And if there’s anywhere in the neighborhood we could stand to build, it’s in the triangle. It’s our least walkable area where small businesses struggle to survive. And if we plan smart, we can secure benefits for our community and get a net win.

Maria Ines Granda, a 49yo woman and a pre-k teacher who lived at 314 79th Street, was found dead in her apartment on Monday, appearing to have been murdered by blunt force trauma to the head.

Yesterday, the NYPD arrested and charged her husband, a 47yo man, with her murder.

I am deeply saddened and disturbed by this apparent act of extreme domestic violence. I will be reaching out to Ms. Granda’s family today to offer my office’s support.

I thank the NYPD and Ms Granda’s son for their quick work in apprehending the suspect, and I hope he is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

My thoughts are with Ms. Granda and her family today.

In response to the charter changes that are depriving Bay Ridge of its voice in rezonings, I am proposing a neighborhood plan for "the triangle" from 86th Street to 95th Street, between 4th and 5th Avenues.

Why? Because according to the charter changes, the only way to get our vote back is to build our way out. And by engaging in a neighborhood plan, we not only can help inform the vision and design - we could secure an environmental review and millions in infrastructure and community investments from the city.

Why the triangle? Because if there is any area in the neighborhood where we could stand to build, it's here. One of our least walkable corridors where small businesses struggle to survive. And its especially susceptible to development because, being zoned NOT for housing right now, it will be an easy get for developers come January under the new rules.

The choice is easy: we can do nothing, and let developers run wild in this area. Or, we can plan, exert some community control, and win investments in the meantime.

Happy First Day of School Eve to our public school students and parents!

May the outfits be pristine, the morning smooth, the drop-offs as full of excitement as they are of tears, and the pickups full of joy and promise.

And to our teachers and administrators: thank you for all you do to keep our kids safe, supported, and curious. We love you!

I was lucky this week to be able to cut the ribbon on the new Dewey Annex with the Mayor, the Chancellor, and colleagues in government. To the new Dewey Annex students and to ALL our students in southern Brooklyn: have a great year!!

Ok folks we are making progress on the 17th Ave bridge -- the arches are finally being installed next weekend! Hallelujah.

However, to get this done, there will need to be closures of the belt in both directions for a limited period of time in the overnight periods on Friday September 18th, Saturday the 19th, and Sunday the 20th. Please see the graphic for details.

The bridge will still not be completed once these arches are in place but we are nearing the finish line. I am happy that our advocacy to DOT has worked.

Heads up: the proposed building for the current Staples site (9319 5th Avenue) will be up for a City Council hearing in the Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises this Wednesday, September 8th at 11 AM.

The hearing will take place at 250 Broadway in Hearing Room 3, or you can join online. The link has not been created yet, but it will be accessible on the Council website, which I will post below, on the day of.

Excellent news! The plan to create a Truck Route in Bay Ridge has been cancelled!

Earlier this summer, the Department of Transportation proposed a new Truck Route on 3rd Ave and 86th St in Bay Ridge. You may have seen the letter that Senator Gounardes and I sent to the Commissioner where we strongly urged them to reconsider. Additionally, the community pushed back and made our voices heard loud and clear through hearings and public comments.

Well, our voices were heard: Third Ave and 86th St will NOT become a truck route.

Thanks to our collective efforts, this vital commercial corridor will not be subject to an influx of giant delivery trucks which would have endangered pedestrian safety, and would have concentrated noise, pollution, and traffic on two of our busiest streets. I want to ensure that Bay Ridge remains livable and vibrant, and preserving 3rd Ave and 86th St is a vital part of that mission.

Thank you all for speaking up against the proposal and taking part in the process.

Bay Ridge, listen up! We are about to lose our input on what gets built in our neighborhood. New laws that voters approved in November will take effect in January. These laws will majorly change the process of how developments get approved. The new process removes the vote of the local Council Member (me) and diminishes the community’s input in the process. But don’t worry, I have a plan to help us keep our seat at the table. Stay tuned for details and how to be involved.
