Thurston County REMS (Rapid Extraction Module Support) has been providing medical coverage for firefighting crews on the . The REMS team maximizes standby time to cross train with firefighters and practice technical rescue skills so they will be ready in the event of a true medical emergency on the fire line.

Cross training with fire crews makes real-life rescues less chaotic when everyone is prepared and understands their role. Shout out to Thurston County REMS and other fire line medical resources for being ready and willing to be there for our firefighters in incredibly steep, rugged terrain.

The determination for the type and quantity of medical support needed on a fire assignment is influenced by the number of firefighters, the type of work they are engaged in, geographic size, fire behavior and terrain.

The Thurston County REMS team was reassigned from the Tunnel Five to another fire today as the need for medical coverage decreases with demobilization of resources.

Operaciones: Los bomberos continúan con la ardua labor de monitorear las líneas de contención alrededor del perímetro del incendio, a lo largo de Cook-Underwood Road y sobre el Highway 14. Por favor, sea precavido y disminuya la velocidad al manejar su vehículo cerca del área en donde los bomberos se encuentran trabajando y de esta manera asegurar la vida de estos.
Al final del día de hoy, se dará una desmovilización del Grupo de Bomberos Team 12 y otros grupos recursos de bomberos que fueron asignados al Incendio Tunnel Five.
Para el día de mañana, un grupo de Manejo de Incidentes Tipo 4, asumirá el comando del incendio. En los próximos días, cuando se experimenten temperaturas más altas y los vientos más fuertes retornen al área del incendio, las cuadrillas de bomberos y sus equipos que permanecerán en el área del incendio serán utilizados para patrullar la zona afectada y controlando las áreas en donde se están consumiendo espacios de emanación de calor. El humo producido por la quema interna de material de combustión podrá ser observado por cierto tiempo en la comunidad afectada por el incendio. Se le pide al publico en general que por favor evite llamar a la línea 911 para reportar la presencia del humo cerca del área del incendio.
Este será el Reporte final del Incendio Tunnel Five a menos que se dé una actividad significativa en el incendio.
Ordenes de cierre y Seguridad: Debido al peligro que representan los árboles debilitados por las llamas y los cambios realizados en el terreno en la lucha de extinguir el incendio, se mantiene cerrada la ruta de Washington State Route 14 entre la milla marcada numero 56 – 65.

Tunnel Five Fire Quick Facts:

Start Date: July 2, 2023

Weather: Increased humidity and lower temperatures over the weekend decreased fire activity within the perimeter, but an expected increase in temperature and wind speeds may contribute to more interior burning over the next few days, producing more smoke in the fire area.

Operations: Fire crews will continue to monitor containment lines around the fire perimeter, along Cook-Underwood Road and Highway 14. Please slow down near working crews and use extreme caution for the safety of firefighters.

NW Team 12 and many of the firefighting resources assigned to the Tunnel Five Fire will be demobilized at the end of shift today. Tomorrow, a Type 4 Incident Management Team will assume command of the fire. Remaining fire crews and equipment will be utilized to patrol the fire area for the next several days as warmer temperatures and higher wind speeds return to the area throughout next week and pockets of interior fuels continue to consume. Smoke from this interior burning will be visible for some time to come. Please do not call 911 to report smoke in the immediate vicinity of the fire area.

This will be the final update for the Tunnel Five Fire unless significant activity occurs.

Safety and Closures: Washington State Route 14 remains closed between mile markers 56-65 due to safety hazards from fire weakened trees and terrain that has been compromised by fire activity. Operaciones: Los bomberos continúan patrullando y manteniendo las líneas de control alrededor del incendio. El día de hoy, las cuadrillas de bomberos y sus equipos estarán trabajando arduamente a lo largo de Cook-Underwood Road próximo a las carreteras. El camino esta abierto solamente para el trafico local. Por favor, baje la velocidad al conducir su vehículo cerca del área en donde se encuentran trabajando los bomberos y sea bien precavido por la seguridad de estos. La protección de la infraestructura y la limpieza del área será una tarea continua, mientras el Grupo NW 12 prepara la desmovilización de la mayoría de los recursos de las cuadrillas de bomberos en los dos turnos siguientes. Se podrá observar el humo y las aeronaves entre el corredor del I-84. Este fin de semana se espera un incremento en el tráfico con visitantes en el área.

De manera cordial, pedimos a transportistas y navegantes del rio que manejen con mucha precaución en el agua y en las carreteras en el área afectada por el incendio. Por favor este atento al paso de bomberos y sus equipos en su esfuerzo de contener el incendio. Manténgase alejado de las zonas en el rio en donde las aeronaves se encuentran sumergiendo o extrayendo agua.

La presencia del humo puede impactar el grado de visibilidad sobre las carreteras en el área del incendio. Por favor maneje despacio y siempre tenga en mente la presencia de nuestros bomberos trabajando arduamente en la zona del incendio.

Weather: Temperatures across the fire area dropped yesterday, as did wind speeds, reducing fire activity inside containment lines. Today, humidity recovery is better in the fire area, but warmer temperatures and erratic winds from nearby storm systems could contribute to increased fire behavior within the perimeter.

Operations: Firefighters continue to patrol and hold control line around the fire. Crews and equipment will be working along the Cook-Underwood Road in close proximity to the roadway today. This road is open to local traffic only. Please slow down near working crews and use extreme caution for the safety of firefighters.

Mop up and structure protection will be ongoing as NW Team 12 prepares for the demobilization of most firefighting resources over the next two shifts. Remaining fire crews and equipment will be utilized to monitor the fire area for the next several days as warmer temperatures and higher wind speeds return to the area throughout next week and pockets of interior fuels continue to consume.

Safety and Closures: Washington State Route 14 remains closed between mile markers 56-65 due to safety hazards from fire weakened trees and terrain that has been compromised by fire activity. Crews are actively engaged in clearing these safety hazards to safely reopen the highway. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction over the Tunnel Five Fire area. Wildland fires are a “no fly zone” for drones. If you fly, WE CAN’T. Smoke and aircraft will be visible within the I-84 corridor.

With the expectation of increased recreational traffic this weekend, we ask drivers and boaters to be extremely cautious on the water and roadways in the fire area, watching for firefighters and apparatus as they continue suppression efforts. Stay clear of areas on the river where aircraft may be dipping or drawing water. Visibility on roadways within the fire area may be impacted by smoke. Please drive slowly and be mindful of crews working in the area.
