Charlestown Ambulance Rescue Service Pre-Hospital Emergency Medical Service Provider Due to expansion of the Fire Department, Charlestown Ambulance was forced to find a home of their own.

In 1971, a group of residents from the Town of Charlestown recognized the need to provide Emergency Medical Services for the residents and visitors to this southern New England coastal community, thereby forming Charlestown Ambulance Service. Charlestown Ambulance is a volunteer, non-profit organization which is supported by an annual donation drive, contract services, revenue recovery from servic

es provided and grants. When Charlestown Ambulance first began the endeavor of providing Emergency Medical Services, the Cross Mills Volunteer Fire Department, of the Charlestown Fire District allowed an ambulance to occupy a bay within their fire station. In 1983, through more than gracious donations from local property owners, the land at 4891 Old Post Road, Charlestown now houses Charlestown Ambulance Service. Charlestown Ambulance quickly grew and expanded upon the scope of EMS. Not only is emergency transportation provided to local hospitals, but rescue operations are also provided along with water rescue and light technical rescue work. With this came a name change. Charlestown Ambulance Service has expanded to Charlestown Ambulance-Rescue Service. Charlestown Ambulance-Rescue Service currently operates two ambulances, equipped to the Paramedic Level of Care with state of the art monitoring and diagnostic equipment.

🚑 Last night, our team participated in advanced airway training led by Clinical Educator Lillian Hogan and Medical Director Dr. Anthony “AJ” Noto.

Training focused on critical airway management skills including intubation, cricothyrotomy, and other advanced airway interventions our providers may need to perform in high-acuity emergencies. Our Paramedics also completed MAI scenarios and annual competency testing as part of their annual required training.

Ongoing education and hands-on training are essential to maintaining proficiency in these low-frequency, high-risk skills and ensuring our crews are prepared to provide the highest level of care to our community when seconds matter most.

Please join us in congratulating Deputy Chief Bridget Whaley on two incredible accomplishments!

Last month, Bridget graduated from UCONN with her Master of Science in Nursing (MSN), and today she officially passed her APRN certification exam!

Bridget’s dedication to patient care, education, and the EMS profession continues to make a tremendous impact on our organization and the community we serve. We are incredibly proud of her hard work and this well-earned achievement as she continues advancing both her nursing and EMS career.

đźš‘ Meet the Crew Monday: Richard đźš‘

Richard is originally from Voss, Texas 🤠 and now calls Charlestown, Rhode Island home. After retiring from the United States Air Force in 2016, Richard joined Charlestown Ambulance-Rescue Service in 2021 as a driver. Not long after joining the team, he earned his EMT license and later his Paramedic license through the NEIT Paramedic Technology Associates program.

Today, Richard serves as a Lieutenant, Boat Operator, Rescue Swimmer, and member of our Board of Directors.

“Joining CARS has been one of the best experiences in my life after the military. We have that same sense of pride watching fellow providers advance in their careers to become nurses, PAs, nurse practitioners, and even doctors. We train hard to be ready for the worst so we can make a positive impact on patients’ lives during some of their worst days. It is amazing working alongside such talented individuals, learning from all of them, and becoming the best paramedic I can be.”

đźš‘ Meet the crew Monday: Abby đźš‘ đź©ş

Abby is from West Greenwich, RI and joined Charlestown Rescue while completing her Bachelor’s of Science from URI.

Abby has been a valuable member of CARS for the past 6 years and has held multiple different roles, ranging from lieutenant to interior designer. She is currently works as a Cardiac on the department.

She most recently graduated from Bryant University’s Physician Assistant program and will soon be starting her career as a Critical Care PA in an ICU.

“My time at CARS has truly shaped me into the provider I am today. Every shift brings something new to learn, adapt, and overcome. This town keeps us on our toes, constantly challenging us to think outside the box with every call. What stands out most is our team: always putting our patients first and doing what’s best for them. I’m so proud of the medical advances we’ve made so far and excited for what the future holds for this department.”

Charlestown Ambulance-Rescue Service appreciates the continued collaboration and support from Rhode Island legislators, EMS leaders, healthcare partners, and community stakeholders as discussions continue regarding Mobile Integrated Health–Community Paramedicine (MIH-CP) and Treatment in Place legislation, H 7485 and S 2685.

These programs are already helping improve patient outcomes, reduce unnecessary emergency department utilization, and connect residents with the right care at the right time throughout Rhode Island communities.

We especially want to thank Rep. Tina Spears, Sen. Victoria Gu, and cosponsors who have helped advance these important healthcare and public safety discussions.
