Did you know the Hedge Maze has a royal connection? 🍃🏰
Our Hedge Maze was inspired by the famous Yew Maze at Hever Castle in England; a castle with more than 600 years of history and, most famously, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, the second wife of King Henry VIII.
Hever Castle’s maze has its own fascinating history. In the early 1900s, American businessman William Waldorf Astora purchased and began restoring the castle, transforming its grounds into elaborate gardens. Among his additions was the Yew Maze, created in 1906 from 1,000 yew trees imported from the Netherlands. Today, those hedges stand about 8 feet tall, with nearly a quarter-mile of pathways winding through the maze. (Top image)
Inspired by this remarkable English garden, the arborvitae surrounding Castle Farms’ Fantasy Railroad continue to grow taller each year (bottom image). Someday, perhaps our maze will rival the towering hedges of Hever Castle!
