🌿 Happy National Public Lands Day!

We are proud to work alongside amazing partners across NC and SC to protect the parks, preserves, trails, and natural areas that make our region special.

From local greenways to state parks and protected lands, these places connect people with nature, support wildlife, and improve our quality of life. Together, we're ensuring they remain accessible and healthy for generations to come.

Thank you to all who help steward the public lands we love.

Upcoming public volunteer opportunities:

1) Native planting event at Pinhook Preserve in Gastonia, NC
Wednesday, Sept. 30, 2026
9am - 1pm

Help us transplant 180 native plants into the meadow - many grown from seeds collected at the Pinhook Preserve. This meadow represents a key refuge for many flowering species that once covered much of North Carolina. The site has been prepared and volunteers will be needed to plant and water each seedling! This planting day will involve substantial work on the ground (kneeling, crouching, etc.). Gloves will be provided.

2) Trail maintenance workday at Duke Kimbrell Trail in Belmont, NC
Saturday, Oct. 17, 2026
8:30am - 1pm

Join us in recognizing Great Trails State Day on Oct. 17th by volunteering to help tackle overgrown vegetation, remove accumulated sediment, and resolve key drainage issues on the Duke Kimbrell Trail. This is a great opportunity to learn about trail stewardship firsthand and support the conservation mission of Catawba Lands Conservancy and Carolina Thread Trail. No experience or tools are required to participate.

Bring the family for a fun and kid-friendly evening of Halloween-themed outdoor education!

Join us on Saturday, October 3, as we walk along the Briar Creek Greenway and learn about spooky creatures of the night and the importance of urban green spaces. Catawba Lands Conservancy staff will be joined by local expert Abby Fry, who will share information about bats and lead participants in using a bat monitor.

Attendees will meet at the Mint Museum Randolph parking lot and walk together along Briar Creek Greenway to Eastover Ridge Preserve, located in the heart of Charlotte.

The event will begin around 7pm and will likely wrap up around 8pm, but attendees may stay as long as they wish.

This is a free event.

The Buffalo Creek Preserve Trail is now reopened!

Trail repairs have been completed after a sewer line was constructed last winter across the property which had closed the trail past the big suspension bridge.

A huge shout out to the staff and volunteers who worked to clear and build an alternate path parallel to the old trail that was not within the sewer corridor. You can now hike the trail at Buffalo Creek Preserve from beginning to end.

📸Check out our August observation of the month!

Congratulations to this month's winner who captured a photo of an Eastern Box Turtle taken in North Charlotte. Designated as the state reptile of NC in 1979, the Eastern Box Turtle gets its name from its ability to box itself into its shell when it senses danger and typically has a lifespan up to 25-30 years.

Did you know that Box Turtles are commonly found throughout the Eastern United States along trails and roads? They are happiest if left alone, but a turtle in danger of being hit by a car may be carefully moved across the road in the direction it was traveling (by a responsible adult).

Fun fact: every box turtle has a unique shell pattern, just like human fingerprints!

🌿 Building confidence, connection, and a love for the outdoors.

This summer, Catawba Lands Conservancy's Jenner Wood V Citizen Science Program was proud to partner with Charlotte Family Housing Summer Camp, engaging youth ages 8-15 in outdoor exploration, environmental education, and hands-on experiences in nature.

Charlotte Family Housing does incredible work supporting families experiencing homelessness by providing temporary housing, trauma-informed support, and resources that help families achieve long-term housing stability and self-sufficiency. Through their summer camp program, young people have opportunities to learn, grow, and create lasting memories.

We were honored to share the wonder of the natural world with these inspiring youth and help foster a deeper connection to the lands and waters that make our region so special.

Thank you, Charlotte Family Housing, for your partnership and for the life-changing work you do for families in our community. 💚
