Saturday, August 27th. the Urban Growers Collective Green ERA Chicago mission manager (Vernon) presented the project in his words for the first time. We are glad to have Vernon on the team, an Auburn Gresham resident, that the fits the model of having a better than living wage "local" job, were he can walk home to lunch and work for an organization that is cutting edge and preparing the neighborhood for the new Green Era! Reach out to Vernon to see where the project is and how you can get involved. We are growing resources to secure a new educational center, the new technology and the workforce on the campus!

** Also great presentations around challenges and needs and questions for the entire 21st Ward Town Hall, Vernon's presentation is last....ENJOY!

DISCOUNT ALERT ON BACK-TO-SCHOOL ITEMS!
A sales tax holiday begins tomorrow on back-to-school gear, 8/5/22. Amid historically high inflation, Illinois will cut its portion of the sales tax from 6.25% to 1.25% on qualified back-to-school items, reports my colleague Satchel Price at the Chicago Sun-Times.

The sales tax holiday will last until Aug. 14, and you can find a lengthy list of eligible items in the link. It includes clothing, school supplies and footwear.

“The retail selling price on each item must be less than $125, and there are exceptions if, for example, you’re looking to buy sports gear or art supplies like paintbrushes or watercolors,” Price reports. [Sun-Times]

The Faith Community of Saint Sabina Auburn Gresham Neighborhood Network

New Faith get ready to exercise your faith at this year’s community FAITH WALK! We are excited to partner with Father Michael Pfleger and the The Faith Community of Saint Sabina to put on this historic event; we will saturate our community, neighborhood and streets with Prayer, Praise and Worship!! WE CAN’T DO IT WITHOUT YOU! Put on your gym shoes, wear your faith-promoting gear and let’s take our faith to the streets! Remember what Luke 14:23 says to us “And The Lord said unto the servant, Go out into the highways and hedges, and compel them to come in, that my house may be filled.”

A few Logistics to take note of:

- Faith Walk will Begin and End at Saint Sabina Church.

- You can drive directly to Saint Sabina and park in their lot at 1210 W. 78th Place for easy access to your vehicle before and after the walk.

- New Faith Church Van will be available between 6:30 - 7pm as a shuttle from New Faith parking lot, if you wish to park there. (It is recommended that if you have a car to please park at Saint Sabina to allow seats for young people without transportation.)

- During the walk, the route will include a stop at New Faith for prayer and worship outside of our church as well as Saint Sabina’s.

- Chicago Police Department will block off streets and es**rt us the entire route throughout the neighborhoods to ensure safety.

- Water will be available on the church van to promote healthy hydration, you are also encouraged to bring your own.

- Members are encouraged to create signs to promote peace, love, faith and healing in the community to hold up was we walk.

Lots more great art going up all around Auburn Gresham. We’ve been working with residents, volunteers, families and young people to develop community led designs and they are absolutely stunning! Keep checking back all month to see our first mural, of capstone project, go up up along the Auburn Gresham corridor.

The mural aims to capture the essence of Auburn Gresham, and neighbors can pitch in to help on a July 23 community day.

This year, ComEd is evolving the Icebox Derby to become the EV Rally. Much like Icebox Derby, six teams of young women will work with ComEd mentors to build an EV race cart over four build nights. The event will culminate in a race this summer. The locations for the race as well as the build nights are still being finalized. Each participant who completes the program will receive a $2,000 scholarship and an iPad. The change to a more EV-focused event comes as our company focus is moving more towards clean energy and electric vehicles.

They are recruiting 30 young women, aged 13-18, to participate. They can be in middle school or high school but they must be at least 13 by June 1 and no older than 18 on race day. Young women from anywhere in Illinois are eligible to apply.

The date of the big race is Aug. 6. This is the weekend between Lollapalooza and Bud Billiken. The build nights are July 26 and 28 and August 2 and 4. The race and the build nights will take place in Chicago. Information about the event and the application are available at ComEdEVRally.com.

There is a need for feedback from the community and the schools(parents) concerning a proposed recycling food waste operation- Anerobic Digester 650 W 83rd within the community.

The feedback needs to be addressed in writing to the public offices listed, Ms Bailey from the IEPA contacted me again yesterday, April 1. She wants all feedback from the communities to be emailed ([email protected]) to her as soon as possible.. We need to stop such operations from setting up.
There are enough envionmental threats/pollutants that exist within our communities and the last things that we need is to allow others to freely operate other operations that will only add to the problems.

We know that the operation will be an environmental threat to the communities. Such operations produces gases (combustible) and other pollutant threats to our health, well being and safety..
