Springfield: Support the Raise Up IL Campaign!

THREE days until the state budget passes and we need you to take action to make sure that communities are funded and NOT CUT!

Billionaires grew their wealth by $931 billion in 2020 -- meanwhile, human services, public education, and other critical services have suffered. We need the people’s plan, a package of 8 bills that would raise billions of dollars in revenue to fund long-term solutions for our communities - and we need YOU to help us get this done!

Take 1 minute to email your representatives and the budget negotiators, then 5 minutes to call them:

Take action here: p2a.co/rux0kyz

To email them, fill out your information and click send. To call, navigate to the right hand corner and click the telephone icon. Once you provide your phone number, you’ll receive a call - pick up and you will hear instructions and be patched through to legislators’ offices.

What Would You Tell Your Government?

Four days until the state budget passes, which will determine funding for schools, housing, social services and more for the next year. Seniors demand that our communities not be ignored!

We need Springfield to know: now is NOT the time to cut budgets! If our communities will ever recover from the many crises we're facing, we need big long-term investments - and we need to go beyond the one-time federal aid. No cuts, close corporate tax loopholes!

Jane Addams Senior Caucus has been working with Raise Up IL to ensure that funding goes towards expanding the Community Care Program; a program that allows seniors to age in their homes/communities by providing long term services and supports. The pandemic has hit our communities hard, and more than ever Illinois needs an economy that works for the people, not corporations!

Thank you to the elected officials that are in support of the People's Plan!

Jane Addams Senior Caucus leaders joined Raise Up Illinois for today's Tax Day really at the Chicago Board of Trade to demand the passage of 8 bills that raise billions of dollars by ending tax breaks for big corporations and ultra-wealthy individuals. The state budget passes in only 3 weeks! Our communities are struggling and we need big investments in housing, schools, services and more. This Tax Day, the rich should pay up!

JASC is fighting for the expansion of the community care program so seniors can receive the long term care support they need to age with dignity in their homes and communities.

We are here on #TaxDay at the Chicago Board of Trade with #RaiseUpIL coalition to demand Progresive revenue from the wealthy and corporations! We need to fund important programs for our communities!

We hold the family and community of George Floyd in our hearts. A guilty verdict for his killer is not the same thing as justice. In the brief moment of relief of hearing the guilty verdict, we were then saddened and angry to learn about the killing of Ma’Khia Bryant, 16, by the Columbus Police Department in Ohio yesterday. We mourn for her. It is time to end this chapter in our history by defunding the police and instead investing in living wage jobs, housing for all, health care, mental health support, and other essential community services that actually keep seniors, our families and communities safe.

Jane Addams Senior Caucus Reaffirms: Black Lives Matter, Brown Lives Matter, Defund the Police

Jane Addams Senior Caucus is deeply saddened and enraged by the murder of 13 year old Adam Toledo by the Chicago Police Department and Daunte Wright by police in Brookylyn Center, Minnesota. We mourn their lives.

In a country that continually reinforces white supremacy, justice can only be achieved when we confront and repair the anti-Blackness that is woven through every aspect of society—in our homes, schools, communities, and government. For too long, Black people have been silenced and killed under the physical and mental violence of our criminal system — built by, and for, the preservation of a patriarchal, racist world view. Each of us must act now to demand that real steps are taken to end the undeniable racism and injustice in the United States that defines Black lives as expendable.

It is time to end this chapter in our history by defunding the police and investing instead in living wage jobs, housing for all, health care and other essential community services that actually keep our families and communities safe.

JASC stands with Black Lives Matter in the affirmation of Black lives and vow to work with all who envision a world free from the institutions and violence perpetrated by racism.

In response to the continued police violence against Black communities, Hollaback has organized an online Bystander Intervention to Stop Police Sponsored Violence and Anti-Black Racist Harassment training. You can register for it here: https://zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0FpG_2QMQRi58ErShEcVvg?fbclid=IwAR17NHRlJgbx9TJlUZriNxe_7UQTLIKvaqY2tAqpsSWfJhrC6yG8G5BsVNA

Reggie speaking today at the #RaiseUpIL launch. Reggie is a home care worker. He and others seniors from the Senior Caucus are asking that Springfield #MeetTheMoment and pass progressive revenue to add $1.1 Billion to this state budget to improve care for 100,000 seniors already using the community care program and expand it to 10,000 more seniors this year. This is critical so seniors are able to age with dignity in their homes rather than in nursing homes!

Jane Addams Senior Caucus is heartened to see the progress on vaccines for seniors, but we know that there is more to be done. Only 50% of seniors in Chicago have been vaccinated so far--and there are many barriers that seniors still face. The city must do more.

Press Release - Georgia’s Asian American Leaders Call for Community-Centered Response After Six Asian Women Are Murdered

During this time of crisis for our AAPI community, we call on our local and state government to provide robust and responsive crisis intervention resources, including in-language support for mental health, legal, employment, and immigration services. It is time for Georgia to invest in transformative justice that begins with cross racial dialogue and community-building that address the root causes of violence and hate.

Medicare for All Act of 2021 Introduction

IT’S TIME FOR MEDICARE FOR ALL: The Medicare for All Act of 2021 is transformative legislation that guarantees health care to everyone in America as a human right. Today, Representatives Jayapal and Dingell are introducing this vital legislation and, with their colleagues and allies, making a strong case for it. The United States is the richest country in the world, but millions of Americans still can’t afford health care. #MedicareForAll will change that – it’s time for a bold change. (via act.tv)

03/15/2021

Exciting news! On March 17th, U.S. Reps. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) and Debbie Dingell (D-Mich.) will be introducing the Medicare for All Act of 2021 in the 117th Congress.

COVID 19 pandemic has made it clearer then ever that we need a health care system that leaves nobody out – regardless of their income, race, zipcode or age. More than 143,000 American died from COVID 19 over the last year because we prioritized the profits of insurance companies over guaranteed health care for everyone.

Join JASC and thousands of activists on March 17th as we celebrate the launch of the Medicare for All Act of 2021 with Reps. Jayapal and Dingell, patients, doctors, nurses, business owners, civil rights leaders and more.

JASC will live stream The Medicare for All Town Hall Introduction from our JASC page on March 17th!

Hire Ombudspersons to protect and support congregate residents

Congregate facilities such as nursing homes have been devastated by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hundreds of thousands of nursing home residents have contracted and died from COVID-19 across the country. In Chicago, thousands have contracted and died from COVID-19.

Why did Mayor Lightfoot refuse to fully staff the department protecting health and safety of nursing home residents?

Despite having $403 million in discretionary federal COVID-19 relief funding, Mayor Lightfoot left the city's ombudsman program short-staffed - she refused to hire ombudspersons exactly when it was needed the most.

Instead of hiring staff that would at least reduce the danger to those most likely to die, she sent $281 million, 60% of the discretionary federal COVID-19 relief funds Chicago received to the Chicago Police Department.

This means that, not only did Mayor Lightfoot do nothing to get facility residents out of danger, she added to the danger.

Send a letter to Mayor Lightfoot calling for the ombudsman program to be fully staffed - immediately! Sign this petition: https://actionnetwork.org/letters/hire-ombudspersons-to-protect-and-support-congregate-residents?clear_id=true&referrer=group-institutional-rescue-and-recovery-coalition&source=direct_link

Facility residents depend on the 'Long Term Care Ombudsman' programs for help with a wide range of health, safety and abuse concerns. According to the US Dept of Justice: "all too often, we have found nursing home owners or operators who put profits over patients."

Ask Mayor Lightfoot to protect the health and safety of residents in congregate care facilities. From the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic (which is NOT over), advocates warned that people that live and work in congregate facilities (nursing homes and other institutions) had by far the highest....
