Mission: Jane Addams Senior Caucus is a multiracial, grassroots organization led by concerned seniors in the Chicago metropolitan area. We cross neighborhood, racial, religious and socio-economic lines to find common ground upon which to act on our values. Through leadership development, organizing and popular education, we use the power of our collective voice to work for economic, social and racial justice for all seniors and our communities.

All of us at Jane Addams Senior Caucus are shocked and profoundly saddened by the passing of Dr. Al Klinger, a cherished member of the Jane Addams Senior Caucus’ family. Al spent his last few days surrounded by family and transitioned on December 25th. We cannot express the sadness we feel at this time. We remember Al as a lifelong champion for racial, social and economic justice. He will be sadly missed by many. We offer our deepest condolences to his family who Al cared for and loved so much.

Homes Guarantee Campaign Demands Housing for All

“Many of us had experienced housing insecurity ourselves, and we began to imagine a world in which people lived in environmentally sound homes that they could not be thrown out of if they fell on hard times.” - Linda Armitage on the origins of the #HomesGuarantee campaign

Months into COVID-19 pandemic, seniors say wellness checks have been rare

Read Elvia Malagon's latest for the The Chicago Sun-Times about the city's lack of enforcement of the #seniorsafetyordinance

"Harriett Holmes, 62, lives in a senior building in Old Town and recently got sick with COVID-19, she said. She was rushed to the hospital but was back in her apartment last week. Her building’s maintenance worker has checked up on Holmes, but she thinks that’s because she knows him personally.

“He helped me out because I can’t go out of the house,” Holmes said by phone. “As far as management, no one has communicated with people in the building.”

The senior safety ordinance — passed by the City Council this summer — was intended to ensure seniors receive wellness checks through this public health crisis. But many are awaiting enforcement of the measure from the city.

ACTION ALERT: Call Sen. Durbin TODAY using the call tool link below. Urge him to protect our health care by walking out of Judge Barrett’s confirmation hearing on Thursday, October 15. https://ppls.ac/DurbinWalkoutJASIA

Democratic senators should not participate in this farce, and if they refuse, they could disrupt Judge Amy Coney Barrett’s confirmation process and possibly delay it until after the elections. Over 11.2 million people have already voted in the presidential election. We should wait until ALL voices are heard and #LetThePeopleDecide.

AARP Illinois

Jane Addams Seniors in Action joined two of the other largest Illinois based senior groups, American Association of Retired Persons Illinois (AARP) and lllinois Alliance for Retired Americans (IARA) in a powerful press conference in support of the Illinois Fair Tax amendment. JASIA leaders Carol Edelson and Carmen Betances shared why the Fair Tax amendment to the Illinois constitution would benefit seniors in Illinois. We voice our support of the Illinois Fair Tax amendment and denounce misinformation.

Join AARP Illinois as we come together with some of the largest organizations representing older Illinoisans, Illinois Alliance for Retired Americans and Jane Addams Senior Caucus in this virtual news conference. We are all voting YES to the Graduated Income Tax amendment and say shame on the opposition for spreading lies that confuse seniors.

Watch this video to see #PublicHousing residents respond to a video that twisted their words at the #RNC.

#HomesGuarantee

As #PublicHousing residents, our voices have been silenced for too long and we’re tired of it. We’re angry that the #RNC gave more space to public housing residents than the #DNC. But we’re even angrier that our stories were stolen and twisted by Donald Trump.

Let’s be clear, this is the real story: https://ppls.ac/publichousingvideo

PS: it’s time for 12 million new units of #PublicHousing, $150 billion for repairs, and a #HomesGuarantee.

Breaking Down the Lie, Myth and Misinformation

FALSE: “The Fair Tax is a tax on retirement income.”

FACT: Let’s put the Fair Tax is a tax on retirement income to rest! Illinois is one of three states that does not tax retirement income, such as 401(k), IRA, pension or Social Security benefits. Fair Tax Reform (Graduated Income Tax Amendment) doesn’t change that, period.

Dozens March To Save Lives Of Those In Long-Term Care Facilities, Demand Pritzker Take Emergency Action To Relocate Residents

"In one of the homes, residents were separated from the outside by an iron fence; and, as they shared their stories of overcrowding, improper handling, and even a lack of access to water, they were instructed to return inside by staff over a loud speaker. The residents held their own demonstration and defied orders stating that by speaking out they may lose their privileges, including being able to go outside. They held signs that read 6 months of imprisonment, no answers, even 30 days without water."

Jane Addams Senior Caucus and the Institutional Rescue & Recovery Coalition stand in solidarity and will continue to urge Governor JB Pritzker to issue immediate emergency relocation for residents that want to transition out of these facilities.

A march in Rogers Park on Sunday was organized to highlight the experiences of the elderly and disabled on lockdown in long-term care facilities during the COVID-19 crisis and to demand Governor Pritzker take emergency action to relocate residents.

This week, Mary Ellen is celebrating Medicare's 55th birthday by making calls to Chicago seniors to talk about #M4A. Did you know that #MedicareForAll is estimated to save ~$450 billion each year, with the average American family seeing about $2,400 in annual savings? Despite her #Medicare coverage, she still pays over $400/month for her supplement, prescription drug plan, and treatments. Her social security and pension disqualify her for Medicaid + SNAP, but she barely breaks even every month with all of her medical expenses. She turns 82 this year and says that "I had hoped this time in my life I would be able to do a little bit of travel. But that's not possible due to my insurance costs." Our healthcare system is failing us. We need to improve and expand Medicare with #medicare4all
