Could caregiving be your next career?

Want to become a Care Professional with Home Instead? There are three things we look for that can help make you a strong candidate for an interview.

First, we value caregiving or related experience, and that can include backgrounds like childcare or teaching. Second, we look for candidates with a history of reliability and job stability rather than frequently moving from one position to another. Third, we ask for at least 20 hours of availability each week. We offer both part-time and full-time opportunities, so there’s room to find something that works for you.

As we celebrate hardworking people this Labor Day season, it could also be the perfect time to find work that means something. At Home Instead, we believe in building trust, sharing our hearts, and taking the lead. If those values sound like you, we’d love to hear from you.

🌟 September’s Seasoned Care Pro of the Month: Carol 🌟

For 9 years, Carol has brought compassion, consistency, and heart to the seniors she cares for.

Her journey into professional caregiving began after seeing a Home Instead commercial.

She remembers thinking:

“I could do that.”

And she did. ❤️

Although Carol hadn’t previously worked in professional senior care, she had spent years caring for her own parents.

That experience inspired her to turn her compassion for others into a meaningful career.

One of the things Carol values most is building lasting relationships with her clients:

“Keeping the same Care Pro-client matches really is the big key.”

After one client passed away, her son sent Carol a card that said:

“You magnificently navigated my mother’s unique personality and complicated household.”
💙

Carol’s story is a reminder that caregiving is more than a job—it’s about connection, trust, and making a meaningful difference in someone’s life.

Could you be our next Care Pro?

If you’re a caregiver, CNA, medical assistant, or simply looking for a meaningful career change, we’d love to hear from you.

Have you ever heard “dementia” and “Alzheimer’s” used as if they mean the same thing?

It is understandable. But dementia is an umbrella term for symptoms that affect memory, thinking, and everyday life. Alzheimer’s disease is one specific type of dementia.

Learning the language around a diagnosis can help families feel more prepared for the road ahead.

Caring for a parent can bring up a lot of complicated emotions, especially when the relationship has been difficult.

In this Caregiver Chats conversation, Dr. Lakelyn and licensed mental health counselor Rebecca Johnson explore the often unspoken experience of caring for a narcissistic parent, with compassion for the boundaries, grief, and mixed feelings that can come with it.

Caregiving starts with caring about people.

Nine years later, she still loves it. When she first applied to Home Instead, she knew she didn’t want to work in a department store anymore. She saw an opportunity centered around something much more meaningful to her: helping people.

What started as a job became nine years of caring for others and building relationships. For her, caregiving has never simply been about earning a paycheck. It’s about the people, the connections you make, and knowing that your time and compassion can make a meaningful difference in someone’s day.

If helping others comes naturally to you, caregiving might be more than another job. It could be the kind of work you genuinely love doing.

A great care relationship starts here.

We never send a Care Professional to a client with nothing more than an address. Bringing someone new into your home is personal, and we want both our clients and our Care Professionals to feel comfortable and confident from the very beginning.

That’s why Home Instead offers an in-person introduction. I’m there to introduce everyone, walk the Care Professional through the home or facility, review the client’s routine, and make sure the care plan and responsibilities are clearly understood. I typically spend 30 to 45 minutes there so nobody feels rushed and everyone has an opportunity to get comfortable with one another.

Starting in-home care is a big decision, but the first day shouldn’t feel like you’re opening the door to a stranger. At Home Instead, we take the time to make the introduction personal and help build the foundation for a relationship based on comfort, familiarity, and trust.

When someone living with dementia does something unexpected, our first instinct is often to blame the person.

Instead, blame the disease.

In this clip from Caregiver Chats, geriatric social worker Mindy Crouch shares a simple mindset shift that can help families—especially children—respond with empathy instead of confusion or embarrassment.

By separating the person from the disease, we can protect their dignity, reduce fear, and create more compassionate moments together.

It’s hotter than a pepper sprout out there! 🥵

And while we’re all reaching for iced drinks and fans, older adults need a little extra care to stay safe in the summer heat.

Here’s your caregiver-approved summer safety toolkit for aging loved ones:

💧 Hydrate with variety – Water is essential, but try chilled fruit, herbal iced tea, smoothies, or even popsicles to keep it fun and refreshing.

👒 Dress smart – Light, breathable clothing and wide-brimmed hats help regulate temperature and protect sensitive skin.

🌬️ Cool it down – If there’s no AC, use fans, cold washcloths, or even a bowl of cool water for hands and wrists to provide quick relief.

🌿 Time outdoor activities wisely – Early mornings or evenings are safest. A short stroll, porch chat, or birdwatching can bring joy without overheating.

👂 Connect with care – Sometimes, just being present — listening, sharing a memory, or sitting together — is the best form of comfort.

Let’s keep our older adults safe, seen, and supported this summer.

🔁 Share this post to spread the word about senior summer safety.
