For only the second time in our history, the American Red Cross has declared a NATIONAL BLOOD CRISIS — and patients may already be feeling the impact. Blood donations have fallen to a four-year summer low, worsening this summer’s emergency shortage. Donors are asked to act immediately to help save lives. This news follows the announcement of an emergency blood shortage earlier in July, as the blood supply fell nearly 25% in June. Since announcing the emergency blood and platelet shortage on July 13, thousands of people have stepped up to help. Unfortunately, donations are still not keeping pace with hospital demand, and the situation has escalated. The situation is especially dire for type O blood, as the supply of type O positive blood has now fallen below a one-day supply.

As a thank-you, all who come to give August 1 -31 will receive a $20 Amazon gift card by email.

Please make an appointment to donate blood NOW! If you are a first-time donor or have type O, A- or B-, consider donating Power Red. You can double your impact on the blood supply! Also, more than 50% of Black/African American and Latino donors have type O blood! Please come to give and mark your race so that you can help patients with special blood needs, such as Sickle Cell Disease. Please mark your race so that your donation can be tested to see if you are a match for a Sickle Cell patient (1 in 3 Black/African American donors are a match!) or someone else with special needs.

Childhood experiences don't always stay in childhood.

Many adults struggle with anxiety, relationship challenges, chronic health issues, or feelings they can't quite explain—without realizing those struggles may be connected to Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs).

EMERGENCY BLOOD SHORTAGE

Currently, during trauma season, there is an increased demand for blood due to serious injuries and other medical emergencies. A single car crash victim can require up to 100 blood units. Blood only lasts for up to 42 days on hospital shelves, so constant blood donations are needed to maintain the blood supply. With a 25% decrease in donations in June, hospitals are running on short supply.
Blood donors are URGENTLY needed to give NOW to help ensure patients receive lifesaving medical care without delay. Steps to Hope is partnering with the Red Cross, hosting a blood drive this Thursday, July 16th from 1 PM to 5:30 PM in the Community Room.
