🌾🚜 Ag Safety Day is coming up!

Join NC Cooperative Extension - Jackson & Swain Counties for Ag Safety Day on October 1, 2026, at Wolf Creek Tree Farm in Cullowhee!

This free educational event will provide hands-on training and resources to help make farm, ranch, and rural life safer. Topics will include tractor and equipment safety, CPR and first aid, heat-related illness, ATV safety, health screenings, chainsaw safety, pesticide safety, livestock safety, and more!

📢 Holiday Closure Notice

Vecinos will be closed on Monday, September 7th in observance of the federal holiday. Our staff will return and resume normal business hours on Tuesday, September 8th!

Patients may call 828-293-2274 and leave a voicemail. For medical emergencies, please call 911 or visit your nearest emergency room.

💛 A Farewell Message from Kelly

As Kelly prepares to leave Vecinos, she wanted to share a few words directly with the patients and families she has had the privilege of caring for:

“As I prepare to leave my position, I want to take a moment to express my sincere gratitude for the trust you have placed in me and for allowing me to be part of your care. Please know that your well-being has always been important to me, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to have served you.

It has been a privilege to get to know you, support you through the different stages of your health journey, and share in both the challenges and successes along the way.

I will always value the conversations, the laughs, and the relationships we have built together. I will carry these fond memories and relationships with me.

Saying goodbye doesn’t come easy for me, as I care deeply for you all and your health care. I’m confident that you will continue to receive compassionate and excellent care from the Vecinos team. I welcome my replacement, Jonathan Bentley, and know he’ll continue to provide great care to you all.”

Kelly, thank you for the compassion, dedication, and heart you have shared with our patients and the entire Vecinos community. Your impact will be felt long after your last day, and you will be deeply missed. 💙

A huge round of applause for María Sandoval! 👏💙

María is a 42-year-old patient at our Cullowhee location, and in just over three months, she has lost 18 pounds and lowered her BMI from 37.6 to 33.8!

She has worked hard to make healthier choices by adding more fruits and vegetables to her diet, staying active with walks and light weights, taking her medications as prescribed, and focusing on better sleep and stress management!

María continues to come to her appointments with a great attitude and a commitment to her health. We are so proud of the progress she has made and excited to see her continue! 💙

At Vecinos, our Care Plan Program supports patients living with obesity, diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and high triglycerides. Our providers and Chronic Disease Care Managers work closely with each patient to create a plan that fits their individual needs! Learn more at vecinos.org 🌎🩵

We’re excited to share that we’ve been selected as a 2026 Trust for Civic Life Civic Hub grantee! 🎉

We’ll use this funding to expand our Community Resilience Hub, strengthening disaster preparedness, community connections, and civic engagement across rural communities. This award will help us bring more people together to connect, collaborate, and strengthen our community! 🌎💙

As one of 20 locally led organizations in this year’s grant awards, we’re grateful to be part of a growing network of rural organizations investing in the people, relationships, and ideas that help communities thrive.

Happy ✨

Every milestone deserves to be celebrated! 💙

One of our patients, a 56-year-old gentleman, came to Vecinos in April with an A1C of 11.2%, putting him at high risk for serious health complications. After just 3 months of working with our care team, making a few dietary changes, and starting metformin, his A1C has dropped to 6.9% - a huge improvement and now within the well-controlled range! Even better, his kidney function has improved, helping protect one of the organs most affected by uncontrolled diabetes!

Stories like this remind us that with the right support, education, and care, meaningful change is possible. We’re so proud of his hard work and grateful to be part of his health journey. 👏💙

Welcome back to another ! This week we’re introducing Emily Hamilton, our Clinical Director! 🌟

Emily has been part of the Vecinos team since October 2021, and what she loves most about her job is the people! From working alongside an incredible team to serving patients from many different cultures and backgrounds, she’s passionate about the mission that brings us all together! 🤝🌎

💃 Fun fact: Emily used to be really into salsa and bachata dancing! She’s currently enjoying The Outlander audiobook series and the Scrubs reboot!
