POSITION: CUSTODIAL ASSISTANT
HOURS: 18 HOURS WEEKLY
HOURLY RATE: $18.94/hr

The Cumberland Public Library custodial and maintenance team plays an essential role in keeping the building clean, secure, functional, and welcoming. This position does custodial and maintenance work that requires considerable independent judgement in applying appropriate techniques, materials, and procedures to daily tasks. Duties require carrying and moving up to 50 pounds and climbing ladders. Work is performed under the supervision of the FACILITIES MANAGER.

THIS IS A PART-TIME POSITION - 18 hours a week.

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF THE WORK

Cleans staff and public restrooms, replenishes supplies as needed
Cleans and maintains public areas on the first and second floors, plus staff offices
Removes trash and recycling from public and staff areas
Assists with setup and breakdown for library events
Performs building closing duties: setting alarms, locking doors, and security checks
Removes snow and salts pavement during winter months, includes snow blower use
Assists with monitoring the building for possible facility issues
Performs miscellaneous carpentry, painting, and repair tasks as needed
The right candidate for this position should be able to take on other various tasks as needed and be open to learning new skills while remaining enthusiastic about the overall running of the library building. They should also be flexible, adaptable, work well on a team as well as independently, prioritize tasks, and display sound judgement.

Evenings and occasional Sundays are required. Some Saturday hours also may required. Ideal candidate should have flexibility and be willing to change schedule based on needs of the library.

POSITION: FT BUILDING MAINTAINER
HOURS: 35 HOURS WEEKLY
HOURLY RATE: The starting rate for this position is $21.75/hr with comprehensive benefits including medical, dental, and the possibility of vestment in the state pension system. Hourly rate has very little negotiating space for the current fiscal year.

NATURE OF WORK:
This is varied and responsible manual work in the cleaning, repair, maintenance and security of public buildings.

An employee in this position is responsible for performing maintenance and repairs of plant operations and facilities, as well as assisting with library security, in order to maintain a clean, pleasant, comfortable and safe environment for library patrons and staff. Work requires the exercise of independent judgment in applying appropriate techniques, materials and procedures to the work.

This position includes physically demanding tasks, such as lifting and carrying boxes over 50 lbs. And shoveling snow; and it requires exposure to potentially harmful working conditions, such as in and around building machinery; climbing ladders and working on rooftops; and in routine use of cleaning agents, paints and solvents.

Work is performed under the general direction of the Facility Manager and with responsibility to the Library Director and Assistant Director/Technology Coordinator.

KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES AND SKILLS:
Considerable knowledge of materials, methods, practices, tools, and equipment used in cleaning and building maintenance.

Considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the building trades.

Ability to maintain a schedule of cleaning and maintenance work.

Ability to perform maintenance and repair tasks without close supervision.

Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions.

Ability to communicate verbally and by email.

Ability to work effectively and cooperatively with other members of library staff, administration and outside vendors.

MINIMUM EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING:

At least 2 years’ experience in building maintenance work or in building trades, or vocational or technical degree relation to the above, or some combination of education and experience in the above-related fields.

HOURS, RATE OF PAY, AND SCHEDULE:
The person in this role will be expected to work 35-hours a week spread of 5 days. The schedule will be Monday-Thursday, 9:30AM-5:30PM and rotating Friday/Saturday, Fridays 9:30AM-5:30PM and Saturdays 7:00AM-3:00PM (Labor Day to 4th of July.) The person in this role will be required to work 2 Saturdays in the Summer (July and August,) 8:30AM-1:30PM. This person will be required to work at least 1 Sunday per month (October to May) paid at time-and-a-half the hourly rate.

The person in this role may be expected to occasionally change their schedule in order to help with coverage needs in the Maintenance Department.

Snow removal is paid at time-and-one-half the hourly rate no matter the time/day of the week.

ATTENTION: Due to an electrical issue, a portion of the 2nd floor Reference Area will be without lights until next week.

Tables, computers, stacks, and study spaces are all still accessible and usable (albeit a bit dark in a couple places.)

There is no danger to the building or any patrons while using the space.
