Calling all members of Dallas Fire-Rescue!

Friday, October 23rd, will mark the Annual Memorial & Clean-Up Day at #OaklandCemetery. Dating back as early as 2013, when a firefighter inquired into the whereabouts of John Clark’s (Dallas Fire Department’s first Line of Duty Death) gravesite, volunteers have been visiting the cemetery, along with families off the fallen, and taking part in an annual event which involves cleaning up the headstones and burial plots, to include some 8 #DallasFirefighters who died in the line of duty, at the cemetery. In addition, volunteers will have the opportunity to engage in fellowship with the families of these fallen firefighters to convey the sentiment that they will never be forgotten, and will always be part of the Dallas Fire Department/Rescue family.

None of this can be accomplished without volunteers donating their time; so please consider giving of yourself and helping the cause, as members from the Dallas Fire Department Retirees and the Friends of Oakland Cemetery Dallas, among others, join efforts to help honor those who’ve paid the ultimate sacrifice.

More logistical details, and contact information, is detailed in the flyer; and more information can be read about the event at the following link when NBC 5 - Dallas covered it back in 2013: https://www.nbcdfw.com/news/local/dallas-firefighters-honor-fallen-at-newly-discovered-graves/1969809/

Yesterday DFR Fire #ChiefArtis and his Command Staff visited DFD Station #3 "The Gator Pit". to recognize multiple stations for their heroic actions, in saving a man and his dog, at an March 2020 apartment fire on Fitzhugh Avenue.

The quick, decisive and coordinated actions by the officers and firefighters on scene not only led to an effective rescue, but the efficient and effective mitigation of the overall situation. The fire was contained to the initial units involved, effectively salvaing a significant portion of the building.

Dallas Fire-Rescue Wildland Team

Texas Strike Team 140 has officially demobed from California and is on their way back to Texas. They will be on the road for a couple of days and will then thankfully be back in DFW. Thank you to all the members’ families and friends whom have supported the team since some of them left on 9/11.

Our team is thankful that California Governor's Office of Emergency Services trusted us enough to come help out where we could and for the support that Dallas Fire-Rescue, City of Dallas - City Hall, Fort Worth Fire Department, Southlake DPS, Parker County Emergency Services District 1, Killeen Fire Department
Temple Fire & Rescue, and Allen Fire Department gave throughout our assignments and too many others to list.

Dallas Fire-Rescue Wildland Team has continued, as part of Strike Team 140 #ST140, its mitigation efforts during the #CaliforniaWildfires. Updates from the last two operation periods detail operations that begin as early as 5 a.m. and last upwards of 32 hours! Regardless of the work however, the team continues to remain positive, and feeds off the satisfaction that comes with knowing they are helping to salvage all they can for CAL FIRE, the citizens who’ve been so hopelessly impacted and the entire state of #California.

During the 1st operational period, ST140 was assigned the responsibility of creating, preparing, controlling and providing hoselays to assist CAL FIRE #inmate #handcrews, as well as other handcrews. Work continued through out the night; and at one point members from the team had to put their #paramedic skills to use when a worker from one of the handcrews was struck by a rolling log that fell from a nearby tree. They assisted the line medic in assessing and packaging the patient before carrying him to a safe place for transport. Despite the dangers, crew members got back to work and continued to work the line and hold the line throughout the night.

The second operational period was spent assigned to a different division so the team could assist the United States Forestry Service. ST 140 was assigned to patrol and recon the area to prepare for the incoming fire front, and burn operation, to slow the fire down. There were multiple #airdrops of retardant to strengthen fire lines and reinforce some of the efforts already done in building the dozer and handlines. They assisted with burn operations throughout the entire night; and afterwards, they continued holding the fireline while ensuring there were no spot fires from embers that crossed the line.

The cities involved in ST140 should be very proud of the members they have, and the actions of those members representing their city. Allen Fire Department Fort Worth Fire Department #ParkerCountyESD #southlakefiredepartment Killeen Fire Department #TempleFireDepartment

Thank you to Texas Health for the recognition paid to Dallas Fire-Rescue medics R. Buck and M. Thornton for their #lifesaving actions.

On Monday, September 14th, DFR’s #Rescue10 was dispatched to a medical call at an apartment complex in far North Dallas. Upon assessing the patient, the medics quickly identified a #STEMI (ST(segment) Elevation Myocardial Infarction) and immediately enacted protocols, to include activation of the cardiac catheterization lab and other life saving measures, leading to an impressive “First Medical Contact to Balloon (catheter)” time of less than 90 minutes, and saved the life of the patient.

Carter BloodCare - Donor Portal

To All DFR Members,

Please accept this message as a reminder of the upcoming Blood and Plasma Drive being hosted by DFR in partnership with Carter BloodCare on 10/12, 10/13, and 10/14. For more information, please reference Memo 71 2020 - Blood and Plasma Donation Drive on the IDS.

Though this is strictly voluntary, we are strongly encouraging everyone to consider donating. #BloodDonations are dramatically down and reserves are critically low due to the ongoing #COVID19 pandemic, and this drive is a fantastic opportunity to directly aid our community and demonstrate that, once again, Dallas Fire-Rescue leads the way in serving and assisting the public.

To donate whole blood, please feel free to schedule your donation time through one of the following links:

• Monday, October 12th link: https://ww3.greatpartners.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/117902

• Tuesday, October 13th link: https://ww3.greatpartners.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/117903

• Wednesday, October 14th link: https://ww3.greatpartners.org/donor/schedules/drive_schedule/117904

If you have contracted and recovered from #COVID19 and would like to donate plasma to aid in the treatment of those suffering from the virus, please contact DFR Administrative Lt., Rob Borse, at [email protected], as there are slightly different instructions for that process.

Thank you in advance for your consideration and participation!

Did you know that cooking is the #1 cause of #homefires and home #fireinjuries? Unattended cooking is the leading cause of fires in the kitchen, and that is why the department, in partnership with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), are encouraging citizens of #Dallas to "Serve Up Fire Safety in the Kitchen!" Stay tuned for more safety information throughout the week, and remember to always have properly working and properly installed #smokealarms in your home. Dallas Fire-Rescue Wildland Team, as part of Strike Team 140 (ST140), continues their mitigation efforts at the #CaliforniaWildfires. The past week has introduced varying circumstances, as the team has found themselves in a situations where they had to evacuate areas for #safety concerns, to playing a vital role in, and receiving recognition from top brass for, coordinating with aerial and ground resources to save an important CAL FIRE asset from certain destruction. Shifts vary anywhere between 24 – 30 hours, and a great deal of time is being spent monitoring #spotfires and providing support operations, by holding the #fireline, for hand crews charged with digging #handlines. The crews have had to manage many additional hazards during this time, to include insuring the safety of personnel, fatigue, hose supply, transport of supplies over steep and rough terrain, having a sustained water supply and staying clear of falling trees, to name a few. Despite all this, the team continues to perform admirably with positive attitudes. City of Dallas - City Hall #ServiceFirst #StaySafe #GetHomeSoon

DFR at the California Wildfires

Yesterday, Dallas Fire-Rescue Wildland Team wrapped up an extended operation that took them from 05:00 on October 1st - 14:00 on October 2nd. The operation was spent giving support, assisting in burnout operations and holding the fire line. However, in an update sent out by Deputy Chief #ScottPacot, the crew of Dallas Fire-Rescue #Brush52 (among others) was given high praise for their actions in saving an important CAL FIRE asset, and reads as follows. Keep up the good work!

In my update, I needed to mention that the crew of Brush 52 were able to save an important asset to Cal Fire Operations. A mobile weather center was stationed near Brush 52 when the fire front began to run and cause emergency evacuation of our units of the area. Through a combined effort of the helicopter coordinator from the air, command on the ground and Brush 52, we were able to communicate and ensure their (and ST140) safe escape from the fire area. During this timeframe, the Brush 52 crew was able to dismantle and load the weather station on the Brush unit and transport it to a safe location. Cal Fire was very appreciative of the extra efforts the crew had taken. Because of this I have been advised they will be recognized during tomorrow’s briefing for their extra efforts. Keep in mind this fire covers a very large area and the briefing is live streamed to all different base camps. The Operations Section chief of our area has advised he would like to make sure they are mentioned in briefing for their actions. All are well and in good spirits and looking forward to a getting some rest.
