On the morning of April 22, 2026, Preble Fire Department was dispatched to assist Decatur Fire Department on a reported house explosion that quickly escalated into a working structure fire.

Preble responded with manpower, Engine 408, and Cascade 441. Upon arrival, crews found heavy fire involvement in the attached garage extending into the main portion of the home. Crews from Preble worked on scene for approximately 3 hours to help bring the incident under control.

We are grateful to report that no injuries occurred.

Great work by all departments involved in bringing this incident to a safe conclusion. A special thank you to Ossian Fire Dept and Bluffton Fire Territory for covering the Preble area while our crews were committed.

On Sunday, Preble Fire Department responded to assist Decatur Fire Department with a large structure fire involving multiple barns east of Decatur on 700 N.

Upon arrival, crews found two large buildings heavily involved in fire. One structure measured approximately 325โ€™ x 40โ€™, and the second approximately 200โ€™ x 40โ€™. Strong winds with gusts between 30โ€“50+ mph made fire suppression efforts extremely challenging for crews on scene.

Firefighters from 12 departments worked together to bring the fire under control and prevent further spread. Thankfully, there were no injuries reported.

Incidents like this highlight the importance of mutual aid and the strong cooperation between our surrounding departments. We appreciate the assistance and teamwork from everyone involved.

Thank you to all of the firefighters and agencies who responded and worked safely in very difficult conditions. And special thanks to Southwest Fire District and Bluffton Fire Territory for covering the Preble and Decatur areas while we were busy on scene.

We are all deeply saddened. This is the father of Preston Bemis, who is one of our brothers at Decatur Fire Department.

It is with profound sadness that we confirm the passing of Spirit EMS driver Chris Bemis.

Chris was tragically killed this morning after being struck head-on while operating a Spirit EMS bus. Despite extensive lifesaving efforts, Chris succumbed to his injuries after being flown from the scene to Miami Valley Hospital.

The two passengers Chris was transporting at the time of the crash were taken to the hospital and are reported to be in stable condition.

Chris was a valued member of the Spirit EMS family, and his loss is deeply felt by his coworkers, leadership, and the communities we serve. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, and all those impacted by this heartbreaking tragedy.

Our hearts also go out to the other individuals who lost their lives in this incident and to their families as they grieve.

We are grateful to the first responders and medical teams who provided care and support at the scene and throughout this incident. We ask for privacy and grace for all families and responders affected during this difficult time.
