How can performance audits improve people’s daily lives?

In a new article for the Association of Local Government Auditors' Summer 2026 Quarterly publication, Audit Manager Kharis Eppstein explores how audits can lead to safer sidewalks, better housing conditions, stronger public services, and greater accountability.

We are proud to see our auditors sharing Denver’s experience with the broader local government auditing community.

Why does auditor independence matter?

Denver’s Auditor is elected by the people and works independently from the Mayor’s Office and the city agencies being reviewed.

This independence allows auditors to follow the evidence, ask difficult questions, and report findings objectively, strengthening transparency, accountability, and public trust.

You don’t have to be an auditor to understand an audit report.
Start with these four sections:

Auditor’s Letter: What is the audit about?
Findings: What problems or risks did they identify?
Recommendations: What changes did auditors suggest?
Agency response: What did the agency agree to do?

Audit reports are public tools for accountability.

Residents can use our findings and recommendations to ask questions, contact city leaders, follow agency progress, and stay informed about how public resources are managed.

Our work does not end when a report is published. Through follow-up audits, we continue tracking whether agencies acted on recommendations — and where work still remains.

Audit recommendations are more than suggestions in a report. They give city agencies a clear path to address risks, strengthen operations, and improve accountability.

Findings become recommendations. Recommendations guide action. Follow-up tracks progress.

Employees leaving the city deserve to be paid what they are owed.

Our recent Employee Separation Process Follow-Up found that the Department of Finance implemented many of the Auditor’s recommendations to help ensure former city employees receive earned pay and benefits.

Follow-up audits help track progress after a report is published — and show where work still remains.
