Please help us welcome our newest four-legged officer—K-9 Tex!

Partnered with Officer Avila, K-9 Tex recently graduated from an intensive K-9 training program and proudly completed his first patrol shift last night.

This new team is ready to serve the City of Downey with dedication, teamwork, and an incredible nose for tracking suspects, locating evidence, and helping keep our community safe.

Welcome to the Downey PD family, Tex! We can’t wait to watch this team in action.

On July 14th, the Downey Police Department participated in a nationwide campaign called Operation Adam’s Watch, which was organized by the U.S. Marshals Service. This campaign focused on identifying, locating, and apprehending non-compliant s*x offenders. Downey Police Department detectives along with personnel from the Los Angeles County Probation Department and Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office assisted the U.S. Marshals Service with compliance checks at seven different locations in Downey. Of these checks, one person was arrested for a narcotics violation. All of the other locations were in compliance. No immigration enforcement took place during this campaign.

On July 10, Downey Police Department’s Traffic Unit conducted a dedicated traffic enforcement operation throughout the city, focusing on hazardous driving behaviors that contribute to collisions and injuries.

Enforcement Results:
75 citations issued
69 citations for speeding
1 vehicle impounded
1 DUI arrest

Speed limits exist for a reason. Choosing to slow down, stay focused, and never drive under the influence helps protect everyone on our roads—from drivers and passengers to pedestrians and cyclists.

This year, six of our officers qualified and received the 2025 Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) recognition award! Officers Salvador Hinojosa and John Chae (pictured) Officers Yvette Ruiz, Gabriel Garcia, Travis O’Gorman and Jun Parkyun.

Your actions have made a significant impact in the community. Thank you for your hard work in getting impaired drivers off the road!

MADD award recognizes officers with 25 or more DUI arrests in a calendar year.

Think only the person lighting the fireworks can be cited?

Think again.

Under Downey’s new Social Host and Spectator Ordinance, property owners, tenants, hosts, organizers, and even spectators who knowingly gather to watch illegal fireworks may be held responsible for violations.

If illegal fireworks are being discharged at your property, or if you choose to gather and watch unlawful fireworks displays, you may be subject to administrative fines starting at $4,000 and other penalties.

The goal is simple: reduce illegal fireworks, prevent injuries, protect neighborhoods, and keep our community safe.
