[DULUTH, MN] On Tuesday, August 18, 2026 at 12:44 pm, Duluth Firefighters were able to see flames and smoke coming from the front side of a single-family housing structure located on the 200 block of Mesaba Avenue from their downtown headquarters location and were the first to report the fire to St. Louis County 911 dispatch.

Firefighters from Downtown Headquarters, Lincoln Park, UMD, Spirit Valley, and Lakeside stations responded to the incident.

Headquarters crews were first on scene where the structure was fully involved with fire coming from both levels of the front side of the home. Fire had reached the trees on the front of the property, as well. Shortly after firefighters arrived, the front porch of the structure collapsed. No entry to the structure was made due to unsafe conditions; firefighters attacked the flames from the exterior of the structure.

One firefighter suffered heat exhaustion during the firefight; the firefighter was treated on scene and is expected to make a full and rapid recovery. No other injuries were reported.

The vacant structure is a complete loss, but exact damage figures are not currently available. The incident is under investigation by the Duluth Fire Marshal’s office.

Duluth Fire Department thanks its partners St. Louis County/911 dispatch, Minnesota Power, Mayo Clinic Ambulance, and Duluth Police Department for their assistance in the response.

This week Duluth Fire instructors Hofschulte, Berg, Grieger, and Fischer have been providing up-to-date medical education and training to all Duluth Police Officers.

This training highlights new advances in care and treatment designed to increase victim survival rates from cardiac arrest, traumatic injury, and life-threatening overdose.

At the end of the exercise a joint training scenario occurred where both agencies work together providing an integrated response to a simulated incident.

DFD would like to thank DPD for their efforts in making this training possible.

Our community is safer and more well prepared for medical and traumatic events by sharing perspective.
