Many Wisconsinites grew up with deer antlers or fish mounts displayed on the walls of their wood-paneled living rooms. Now we can also see those displays and more on the walls of museums.

From now through Nov. 21, visitors of Menomonie's Rassbach Museum can view the museum's first natural history exhibit. “Through Glass Eyes: A Look at Taxidermy in Dunn County” spotlights a combination of local wildlife, local history and local craftsmanship.

The pieces include work from two local taxidermists as well as from private collections. Curator Sofi Doane said the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources also contributed pieces used to help in wildlife education.

On Aug. 7, Iris Boutique opened their doors back up in the Market On River — a multi-use building owned by the Wisconsin Farmers Union and designed to host a small businesses and restaurants, events and more.

Over the past 17 years, Iris Boutique has become a staple for shoppers in the community. The boho inspired, women’s apparel-oriented business strives to bring in the latest styles that make you stop in your tracks, said owner Leah Ritchie.

Though the layout is smaller than its former brick-and-mortar spot in Chippewa Falls [pictured], shoppers can still expect to explore the newest weekly inventory and try on styles in their two fitting rooms.

After careers in health care and real estate, local Dave Mickelson dove head first into his longtime passion: non-fiction writing. His new memoir, Between the Waters, details life in Eau Claire from the 1950s and onward.

On a journey from childhood through young adulthood — all set in locations throughout Eau Claire, from Regis Catholic Schools to Half Moon Lake — Mickelson navigates the triumphs and trials amongst his lifelong friends and peers.

In many ways, Between the Waters acts as a love letter to the simpler, meaningful experiences part of growing up in the Midwest. Copies are available to purchase in person or online at The Local Store.

First announced back in 2024, two years of fundraising and community outreach will come to fruition at the Fall Creek Public Library’s new building — which locals will soon be able to enjoy at a soft opening event on Sept. 14.

Following a groundbreaking ceremony last summer, the $8 million library project — supported by $3 million in local contributions and a state Flexible Facilities Program grant exceeding $4 million — is nearing the finish line.

Current staff and a collective of more than 30 volunteers hope to meet the needs of the community through several key features and new amenities at the library, including public meeting rooms, creative and artistic spaces, family areas for children, an outdoor community garden and more.

Wisconsin’s queen of cheese – and founder of Thorp-based Marieke Gouda – Marieke Penterman hit the international streaming stage this month thanks to America's Test Kitchen and its new Netflix-exclusive TV show, “On the Road.”

Episode four of the show, hosted by chef Bryan Roof, introduces foodie viewers to Wisconsin farmers and cheesemakers, including Marieke Gouda and Penterman.

The episode sees Roof explore the Thorp farmstead creamery and learn about traditional cheesemaking from Dutch-born Penterman.

“It’s incredibly meaningful to have that story shared with viewers across the country,” Penterman said, “and now around the world through Netflix.”

When Xavier Artisan Bistro (Xa Bistro) opened its doors in Altoona’s River Prairie in 2022, its feel-good food was singular in its take on Middle Eastern flavors. Five years later, it is still one of the only restaurants serving Mediterranean dishes in the Chippewa Valley – and now, the crew is bringing their cuisine on the road.

Chef Luke Bilda, a familiar face for those who frequent the 1470 Rivers Edge Trail brick-and-mortar, has quietly held his vision for a food truck, for years.

“We decided to take Xavier Artisan on the road and get our food to the people who don’t yet know they want it,” Bilda said. “We are hoping to bring (Mediterranean-Levantine) flavors to a community that has a bustling food scene, but which doesn’t have much of a Levant representation.”

Children and teens are growing up in a world where screens, social media and digital technology are woven into nearly every aspect of daily life. While media can create opportunities for learning, connection and creativity, many parents and caregivers navigate questions about how screen time affects children’s health, behavior and emotional well-being.

To help families better understand these challenges, Mayo Clinic Health System invites community members to a free Imagine Lecture at 7pm on Thursday, Sept. 10, at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire Davies Student Center.

“We have seen a huge shift in how much children and teens are consuming media,” this year's featured speaker, Dr. Angela Mattke, said. “We are all just trying to do our best; I have these conversations (with an) open mind.

A little hazy, grainy and bursting with color, light and movement. That is precisely the feeling left behind after the annual Campout in the Pines with The String Cheese Incident and company, held from Aug. 14-15 at The Pines Music Park.

"From the golden sun-sets, tight hugs and smiles to the dancing, music, colorful outfits, and everything in between, you made this weekend one to remember," Campout in the Pines organizers shared online.

Our season finale is here!

Joe Thielen — who proclaims to be an odd combination of Woody Guthrie, The Kinks, The Cure, and more — takes the stage at 6pm to open the night on Thursday. Minneapolis-based four piece alternative rock band (that formed thanks to a Craigslist ad during COVID-19) John Forrest & The Model Citizens (Social Cues) will follow. Chippewa Valley Weapons of Brass Destruction will close out the summer season with their New Orleans swagger that digs into rumba, mambo, big band, second line, and more.

This week's food & drink vendors are Top Dog Mobile Restaurant LLC, Potato-Potahto Food Truck, Dhimiters, Ramone's Ice Cream Parlor, and Juice by Tene .
