17 years ago, Volume One staff celebrated Halloween with a ghost hunt of the State Theatre for episode 55 of Big Week. Mike Paulus and crew avoided ghosts, but found the creepiest crannies and nastiest nooks along the way.

Oct. 15 marked the 40th anniversary of Oakwood Mall’s opening. Its debut signified a shift in the retail focus of the Eau Claire metropolitan area, accelerating what was then a decline in prominence for the city’s downtown, and eventually leading towards the closure of the Chippewa Valley’s first major mall: London Square.

Volume One and Luc Anthony wrote an extensive story in 2016 on the occasion of Oakwood Mall’s 30th anniversary. The following year, the term “retail apocalypse” became widespread across society, with numerous physical retail outlets announcing closures as online shopping became more routine for customers; the COVID-19 pandemic furthered the trend.

The past decade-plus has seen many shopping malls abandoned, converted to other uses, or demolished. Three former Oakwood Mall anchor stores — Macy’s, Younkers and Sears — closed in 2017 and 2018. Meanwhile, the ongoing 21st century revitalization of Eau Claire’s downtown has returned more vibrancy to the center of the city.

Yet Oakwood Mall now begins its fifth decade with no outward sign of major change to come.

"Some of the most transformative changes that we make are not not necessarily in public arenas, but in the private homes of people," Wisconsin author and educator Pao Lor shared with Volume One.

Lor, the author of Modern Jungles (2021) and Bamboo Son (2026) spoke with an audience of all ages on Oct. 22 at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library.

This discussion, "Sharing a Hmong American Experience," was presented by the Chippewa Valley Book Festival; the 2026 literary sessions aim to draw attention to diverse narratives and now, cultural heritage of the local Hmong community.

"My goal for each of these events is to hopefully share something new that each audience audience member will pick up ... some sort of information or a new perspective to share with their loved ones and their families," Lor said.

Construction on Ohly's forthcoming North American campus – located in Eau Claire's Gateway Northwest Business Park – is underway. The $274 million project will unfold over three phases and create an estimated 90-100 new jobs.

The first phase will result in a 22,000-square-foot "spray drying" facility, depicted in the signage pictured below.

Ohly, a subsidiary of British-based company ABF Ingredients, produces yeast-based and nutritional products.

While not the first ABFI facility in Wisconsin – a smaller Ohly manufacturing facility already operates in Boyceville, about 45 minutes outside Eau Claire – the project, once complete, will serve as Ohly’s North American campus.

Let us introduce you to Sunny, many locals’ “favorite good boy” made entirely of recycled rubber tires, who's also one of the new art installations in this year’s Eau Claire Sculpture Tour.

Sunny was made by Minnesota-based visual artist Alex Zamesin, arriving to our downtown earlier this year for the Sculpture Tour.

While he doesn’t bark or ask for walks around downtown, he does rely on one vital thing from residents: Some help to keep him right here in the Chippewa Valley.

“Let’s keep this good boy right where he belongs,” Visit Eau Claire, WI shared in a new crowdfunding effort. The tourism org seeks to raise $18,000 for costs to purchase the installation. Sunny’s campaign runs now through the winter holiday season.

An axe-throwing venue, automotive repair shop, party supplies store and a Greek restaurant are just a sampling of the small businesses that call Eau Claire’s Olympic Plaza strip mall home. Now, locals will find a new coffee shop has joined the fray.

The space, last host to a bakery and now home to Grind n’ Go Coffee House, has received a sweet and simple refresh. Olive green and cream colored paint serve as the backdrop to purposefully mismatched table-and-chair setups (most of which were thrifted) and a quaint book nook which welcomes patrons.

Owner Cassandra Riehle greets customers from behind the coffee shop counter. She’s swift to recommend coffee and beverage options, if you want some guidance — she’s a sucker for a specialty menu item herself, or a classic caramel latte.

A new five-story, 60-unit affordable housing apartment building, tentatively dubbed the "Barstow Apartments," is in the works in downtown Eau Claire.

The City of Eau Claire has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Impact Seven, a Rice Lake-based property management and development nonprofit, for the project. It would be located at the current Seaver Street parking lot, across from the Sojourner House.

Its creation is contingent on the Wisconsin Housing Economic Development Authority approving the project for its Low-Income Housing Tax Credits (LIHTC) program.

If approved, the apartments would be open to families making between 40%-60% of the median county income.

Impact Seven also operates five other residential buildings across the Menomonie and Eau Claire areas. Of those buildings, four are low-income housing.

Eau Claire's Morley Custom Golf has new owners — Eric and Kati Morley — and the apple didn’t fall far from the tree! They’ve taken over the small business from Eric’s dad, Dave Morley, a retired Eau Claire and New Auburn educator, who opened the small biz in 2005.

Morley Custom Golf’s mission is also its mantra: Golf shouldn’t be a luxury. It aims to widen the accessibility and affordability of a sport both father and son have loved since their youth.

In practice, the small business offers golf lessons for all ages and abilities; it also sells used and new golf clubs (including hickory shafts clubs), golf merchandise and offers golf club repair services. Now, Eric and his wife Kati look to take the business to the next level, broaden its services and lean further into its affordability aims.
