The future of eight western Wisconsin counties’ rural outdoor rec scenes officially has a USDA-approved game plan: the Regional Outdoor Recreation Plan (RORP).

Formally announced by the West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission (WCWRPC) on May 28, the RORP – which spans Buffalo, Clark, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Tremprealeau, Pepin and Jackson counties – received approval this spring after being submitted around the new year.

The RORP has five key focus areas: strengthen and connect trail and waterways systems; support outdoor-related business development and entrepreneurship; invest in infrastructure that attracts visitors and residents; promote sustainable land use and conservation practices; build a recognizable regional identity for outdoor rec.

The Eau Claire County Expo Center's "potential sale" is up for discussion according to the agenda for the Eau Claire County Parks & Forest Committee’s next meeting, slated for 11:30am on Monday, June 22.

The Expo Center, which sits on roughly 27 acres across two parcels of land on the south side of Eau Claire, has over 12,000 square feet of combined indoor event space.

County Administrator, Jon Johnson, said the estimated property value of the Expo Center is about $3 million.

According to County Parks & Forest Director, Josh Pedersen, the Expo Center has been financially lucrative for several years – that fact is not necessarily what is up for discussion.

“Budgetarily, the facility is operating as a cash positive program for our department,” Pedersen shared. “Whether that is the best use of this property and real estate and could it be better served under different ownership, is the question that the committee will need to debate.”

User groups including the Eau Claire Curling Club, CORBA and organizers of the Eau Claire County Fair are among those regularly utilizing the Expo Center.

Whether you're grabbing two-day passes or leveling up to VIP, there’s still time to join in the fun at Summer Jam from June 19-20. Beyond the complete music lineup for this weekend, there will be so much more waiting for the “jam fam” at the Eau Claire Event District.

Now in its second year, Summer Jam is aiming to solidify itself as a regional annual staple. Organizers have curated acts from across the Midwest and beyond for a festival experience that “blends classic rock, pop favorites and summer nostalgia,” a recent media release stated.

Headlining acts including Third Eye Blind, Styx, Gin Blossoms, The Wallflowers, Bret Michaels, Blue Oyster Cult, among others, will bring well-known anthems and nostalgic melodies to the grounds located on the outskirts of the city.

Lake Altoona is one of several bodies of water in the wider Eau Claire area to experience an increase in sedimentation and algae blooms each summer – often resulting in beach closures. With support from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR), citizen-led conservation groups will focus on these issues from both a recreational and financial perspective.

"I live on Lake Altoona, so it’s my home, my backyard and I want to keep it a beautiful place for me and my family and for my neighbors,” Michele Skinner, the Lake Altoona district chair, said. “Let’s see if we can come up with a strategy – that we can work with mother nature – and control the sediment and other types of negative impacts that naturally occur.”

A two-year study funded by the DNR – conducted by the University of Wisconsin-River Falls and West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission – found harmful algae blooms at Lake Altoona have been linked to reduced visitation and ultimately, cost the local economy at least $1.3 million in visitor spending each year.

Comedian Charlie Berens has been touring the region for several months – and came to our neck of the woods this past weekend – departing from his staple Midwest accent-heavy shtick to bring a different kind of messaging to audiences.

Berens, best known for Manitowoc Minute, is a University of Wisconsin-Madison alum and former journalist who has become a vocal critic of data center development. With over 10 million followers across social media platforms, Berens has taken his town hall-style tour to over a dozen communities since 2025.

On Saturday, June 13, Berens was the keynote speaker of “Uniting West Wisconsin: A Regional Response to Data Centers” at the Eau Claire Event District.

According to Cleanview, a market intelligence company tracking U.S. power infrastructure and data center development, there are over a dozen proposed hyperscale data centers in Wisconsin alone.

“There’s a lot of experts here that know their stuff,” Berens told WEAU 13 News at the June 13 event, “and I’m just a billboard pointing to them.”

Third time's the charm!

Besides the very notable addition of sunshine to the lineup, we'll have Quenten Brown opening tomorrow's Sounds Like Summer concert with his acoustic originals. High-energy rock band ValleyKil Band will follow, then Eau Claire's own The Jaggernauts will take the stage to close us out.

After being awarded over $203 million toward its participation in the federal Rural Health Transformation (RHT) program, the Wisconsin Department of Health Services (DHS) is looking to distribute a portion of those funds as grant dollars yet this year.

The RHT initiative – authorized by the One Big Beautiful Bill and overseen by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) – aims to “empower states to strengthen rural communities across America by improving healthcare access, quality, and outcomes by transforming the healthcare delivery ecosystem.”

As of June 15, individuals and organizations across Wisconsin may qualify for three new grants coinciding with the RHT’s goals: the Care Coordination grant, Community Health Worker grant and Rural Dental Efficiency and Access grant.

In total, those three grants could award up to $40 million this year.

A 23-member advisory council – made up of individual providers, those with lived experience utilizing rural healthcare, members of healthcare institutions including NorthLakes Community Clinic , Oconto Hospitals & Medical Center, among others – will support the Wisconsin program.
